This isn’t terribly surprising. The Green Bay Packers haven’t released running back Ty Montgomery, but they appear to be willing to trade him.
NFL Network is reporting that the Packers have put Montgomery on the trade block.
Montgomery has grown frustrated with his use in Green Bay. That seemed to boil over on Sunday when he threw his helmet in frustration after being taken out of the game in the fourth quarter.
Clearly, Montgomery is the third running back and he’s not going to get many opportunities. Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams are going to get the bulk of the carries on a team that doesn’t run much anyway.
Montgomery said he’s unclear what his role is at this point.
“… I got a little frustrated. I wanted to make a play. I wasn’t playing very much and I wasn’t able to make a play and I was frustrated about that. I don’t fully understand what my role is right now, what I’m supposed to be doing, how I’m supposed to help this team. And it’s frustrating when I want to help the team and I get limited opportunities and it didn’t happen on that play. So I came off frustrated about it.”
That’s understandable.
However, Montgomery is now at the center of some sort of fracture in the locker room. If the Packers can’t trade him, it will be interesting to see if they do indeed release him.
They have until 4 p.m. ET today to make a trade.
The upside on Montgomery is he’s still on his rookie contract and he’s versatile. Do you know where he’d probably be good? On a team like the Rams or 49ers. While the latter team isn’t very good right now, both teams have innovative offensive coaches. Sean McVay or Kyle Shanahan would find a way to utilize Montgomery’s talents.
