This is not the time of year you want to be injured if you have designs on making an NFL roster. Running back John Crockett is and that is likely going to cost him a roster spot.
Crockett, who was the favorite to be the Green Bay Packers’ No. 3 running back, injured his shoulder in Friday’s game in San Francisco. He isn’t expected to be ready for week 1 and there has been speculation that that will be enough for the Packers to move in a different direction.
That roster spot and the No. 3 running back job will now likely go to Brandon Burks.
Burks is an undrafted free agent from Troy, but has been impressive during the preseason. He also seems to bring a little something different to the table than the rest of the Packers’ running backs, namely quickness and explosiveness.
Crockett was more of a straight-ahead runner, similar to Eddie Lacy and James Starks.
Of course, if all goes according to plan, the only place we’ll see the Packers’ No. 3 running back is on special teams.
