Safety Morgan Burnett will not be playing when the Green Bay Packers face the Tennessee Titans on Saturday. He’s got an oblique strain, which he suffered on Monday.
That injury has also kept him out of practice all week. Burnett also missed several days during the first week of camp with an ankle injury.
And you know what that means.
The two guys everyone wants to see playing safety for the Green Bay Packers — Micah Hyde and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix — will get to play safety for the Packers!
Barring anything unforeseen, it’s beginning to look like Hyde is going to be a starter. And that’s great. He’s a playmaker and the Packers have too few of those on defense.
If he’s healthy, Burnett is going to be the other starter regardless of how he plays, because Mike has already made up his mind and Ted has already paid him handsomely.
But injuries have a way of taking these decisions out of the coaching staff’s hands, don’t they? Maybe instead of losing a guy they actually need, the Packers could lose a guy who just plain sucks.
Like Morgan Burnett! Or A.J. Hawk!
Then they won’t have to look foolish for benching a guy they insist is a starter but really isn’t and/or admitting the mistake of paying him a ton of money that he clearly doesn’t deserve.
So like Bob Slydell said, it’ll just work itself out naturally.
Seriously, we’re not wishing injury on anyone. It’s just maddening that the Packers won’t make this an open competition. With Hyde more than likely to be a starter, what did you draft Clinton-Dix for?
To stash him on the bench as your secret weapon?
