The New York Jets dumped former All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis earlier this week. We all know who is in bad need of cornerbacks too, don’t we?
That’s right, the Green Bay Packers.
Naturally, some people are connecting those dots.
Peter King suggests the Packers (along with Steelers and Saints) as potential landing spots for Revis if the price is right. And here’s where I just have to wonder why the Packers are suddenly connected to every old guy who gets released? First Adrian Peterson, then Jamaal Charles and now Darrelle Revis.
At any rate, yes, the Packers have an obvious need at corner. So much so that we expect them to bring in multiple cornerbacks this offseason, one way or another. The Packers finished 31st against the pass in 2016 and their secondary was the obvious weak link of the team.
That said, Revis is coming off likely his worst season as a pro. He had just one interception, but never mind that. Revis finally started to look old and get beat… often. And that would make sense when you consider the guy will be 32 this summer.
Another complication for any team interested in Revis is that he’s been charged with four felonies related to a bar fight in Pittsburgh. Not exactly the type of player the Packers usually target. They specialize in pot smokers.
Throw that in the mix with declining skills and the rumors that Revis isn’t even really interested in football anymore and you’ve got quite a few issues that give pause.
That’s what the Packers’ cornerbacks group is already stocked with. Can Damarious Randall bounce back? Is Quinten Rollins even an NFL-caliber player? Can LaDarius Gunter ever evolve into a true No. 1?
Throwing in, “Will Revis return to form and does he even care?” doesn’t make a lot of sense to us.
But hey, it’s speculation season.
