As soon as we heard third-round pick Montravius Adams would need foot surgery to repair a fracture, we knew he’d be sidelined for an extended period.
Just how long that period is going to be seems to be anyone’s guess.
However, what now appears to be a real likelihood is Adams won’t be back for the start of the regular season. The Green Bay Packers haven’t even given Adams a timetable.
“I don’t know,” Adams said. “They just said after this week, we’re just going to take it one week at a time. Try to go after rehab strong and try to get back as fast as I can.”
Fourth-round pick Vince Biegel had a similar surgery in May. He hasn’t been on the field since, although appears to be getting close to a return.
If we’re looking at three months for Adams, that puts us into the middle of the season. At that point, after having missed training camp, it’s unlikely the Packers would get much production from the rookie.
There may even have to be a discussion about an injury designation. Teams can bring two players back from injured reserve during the season beginning this year.
The Packers aren’t there yet, but Adams’ injury will certainly affect their defensive line depth going into the season.
