Packers’ Rival QB Named Among Most Overrated NFL Quarterbacks of 2026

Caleb Williams enters the 2026 NFL season carrying enormous expectations, but the Green Bay Packers’ division rival has also found himself among the quarterbacks labeled as the league’s most overrated. Despite his remarkable talent and flashes of brilliance during his young career with the Chicago Bears, questions remain about whether his production has consistently matched the growing hype surrounding him.

The perception stems largely from the gap between Williams’ immense physical ability and his week to week consistency. The former first overall pick possesses one of the strongest arms in the NFL and has repeatedly demonstrated an uncommon ability to create explosive plays outside the structure of the offense. His mobility, creativity and confidence have allowed him to escape pressure and deliver throws that few quarterbacks would even attempt.

Those qualities, however, have also contributed to criticism from some evaluators who believe Williams occasionally relies too heavily on improvisation. Instead of taking routine completions, he has at times searched for the spectacular play, leading to unnecessary risks and missed opportunities. While those instincts can produce unforgettable highlights, they have also created inconsistency that opponents have been able to exploit during critical moments.

The debate surrounding Williams is also influenced by the expectations that accompany a franchise quarterback selected at the top of the draft. Every performance is examined closely, and comparisons to established stars have only increased the pressure. Although he has shown the ability to take over games with his athleticism and arm talent, many believe he must demonstrate greater efficiency and maturity before he can consistently rank among the NFL’s elite signal callers.

Williams was named one of the most overrated quarterbacks heading into the 2026 NFL season. This is detailed more in an analysis by Garrett Podell for CBS Sports.

However, the high level of universal praise for Williams as the first Bears quarterback with a pulse since, perhaps, the pre-2010 NFC championship game Jay Cutler is a little much. The reason Chicago fell behind in both of their 2025 playoff games and lost in overtime to the Rams is because of Williams’ inefficiency. He morphed into a turnover machine in the postseason, throwing two interceptions while completing just 24 of his 48 passes (50%) in the win against the Packers before throwing three more interceptions on 23 of 42 passing (54.8%) against Los Angeles. The third interception against the Rams came in overtime and doomed the Bears to defeat.

For the Bears, the next step in Williams’ development is not about eliminating his creativity but refining it. Learning when to trust the offense, accept shorter gains and avoid forcing difficult throws could unlock another level of production. His physical tools have never been in doubt, making decision making and consistency the primary areas that could determine how quickly he reaches his full potential.

Whether the overrated label proves accurate will ultimately depend on how Williams responds during the 2026 campaign. If he can pair his exceptional talent with improved discipline and steady execution, the Bears quarterback will have an opportunity to silence critics while strengthening Chicago’s hopes of challenging for the NFC North title.
