The Green Bay Packers entered the draft needing help at wide receiver, defensive line, and the secondary. The Packers added two wide receivers and an offensive lineman in the first three rounds.
The Packers selected defensive end Barryn Sorrell in the fourth round of the draft. He shows promise of developing into a starting pass rusher at the NFL level after posting 15.5 sacks and 29 QB hits in his 43 appearances in college for Texas.
However, it may take a couple of seasons before he comes into his own in the league.
Green Bay Packers named as a suitor for the New York Giants
Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report named a potential solution for the Packers this offseason. He thinks Green Bay could trade for Kayvon Thibodeaux after the New York Giants selected Abdul Carter with the No. 3 pick in the draft.
“There hasn’t been any firm trade chatter surrounding edge-rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux, and the New York Giants did recently exercise the fifth-year option on his contract. However, his future in New York remains unclear,” Knox wrote. The Giants traded for pass-rusher Brian Burns last offseason and then selected Abdul Carter with the third overall pick in April’s draft.
“Carter has the potential to be a franchise-caliber sack artist, while the Giants gave Burns a five-year, $141 million extension after trading for him. Thibodeaux, the fifth overall pick in 2022, could end up being the odd man out of New York’s long-term plans. Now would be a great time for teams to inquire about Thibodeaux’s availability. He’s coming off an injury-impacted season (wrist), but he had 11.5 sacks in 2023 and won’t turn 25 until December…
“The Packers, who didn’t add edge help until taking Barryn Sorrell in Round 4, should also see if Thibodeaux can be had. Perhaps they could acquire him for a package that includes Jaire Alexander.”
Kayvon Thibodeaux would be an upgrade for Green Bay
Thibodeaux has recorded 127 tackles and 21 sacks in his three-year NFL career. The Oregon standout recorded 19 sacks during his three seasons in college.
While the Giants might not want to part with the promising pass rusher, the Packers have nothing to lose by calling general manager Joe Schoen and asking what New York would take for Thibodeaux.
Green Bay needs a little more help than what Rashan Gary, Lukas Van Ness, Kingsley Enagbare, and Sorrell can provide in 2025.
