Jaire Alexander’s uncertain future has hung over the Green Bay Packers throughout the offseason, and in some ways might have motivated the organization to prioritize signing cornerback Nate Hobbs early in free agency.
However, with OTAs getting underway across the country, and several teams still looking to upgrade their secondary, the timing might be perfect for general manager Brian Gutekunst and the Packers to finally strike a deal and move off the All-Pro cornerback who has struggled to stay healthy in recent years.
Do the Los Angeles Chargers Make Sense as Jaire Alexander Trade Destination?
The Los Angeles Chargers’ secondary has been in a bit of a state of flux this offseason, and ESPN’s Matt Bowen suggests that Alexander may solve some of the defense’s woes.
The Chargers signed Donte Jackson to a two-year deal and Benjamin St-Juste to a one-year contract this offseason,” Bowen points out. “However, if Alexander is available in a trade, he would be seen as an upgrade in Jesse Minter’s defensive system. The Chargers are zone-heavy, playing both single-high Cover 3 and split-safety schemes. Alexander has the play instincts and foot quickness to match routes, and his transition speed allows him to make plays on the ball. Alexander has intercepted 12 passes and broken up 57 in his career.”
Schematically, Alexander could be an ideal fit and an elder statesman in the Chargers’ secondary, especially given that Los Angeles has shown little interest in bringing back free agent cornerback Asante Samuel Jr.
