The Green Bay Packers and Brian Gutekunst may be about to embark on an NFL Draft where some of the roster’s biggest needs align with some of the top prospects in this year’s class.
After all, the Packers have few needs more pressing than adding a dynamic wide receiver who can top the depth chart as a playmaker in quarterback Jordan Love’s arsenal, and this is a good year to be searching for receiver help.
Green Bay Packers Could Make WR Top NFL Draft Priority
ESPN NFL analyst Ben Solak suggests that the Packers’ “perfect” draft class begins with adding a reliable and potentially electrifying playmaker at receiver.
“Let’s start at wide receiver,” Solak writes for ESPN. “As running back Josh Jacobs remarked to some consternation in February, the Packers don’t have that consistently dominant star receiver most playoff teams employ. With both Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs approaching contract years, there is room for Green Bay to draft a Round 1 receiver and funnel volume to that player. But only an early pick really makes sense, and it’s tough to imagine either of the draft’s top receivers (Arizona’s Tetairoa McMillan and Texas’ Matthew Golden) making it all the way to No. 23. Should either slide, I’d like McMillan for the Packers — Golden feels like too much of the same in a room already featuring Jayden Reed.”
Whether the Packers are in position to emerge with McMillan or Golden or even Emeke Egbuka remains to be seen, but, even if Green Bay has to wait until Round 2 or later to add a receiver, the likes of Jack Bech, or Taz Johnson or Jayden Higgins there is significant upside for Green Bay to add a major upgrade at a key position of need.
