Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has one NFL team remaining realistically in play for his services in 2025. After signing Russell Wilson yesterday, the New York Giants appear set with a quarterback room that includes the former Wisconsin Badgers star, Jameis Winston, and Tommy DeVito. While they will not totally close the door on pursuing Rodgers as well, it is a safe bet that he will not be on their roster this upcoming season.
New York’s decision to sign Wilson leaves the Pittsburgh Steelers as the only other quarterback needy team in the NFL that is interested in Rodgers. Last weekend, he reportedly spent approximately six hours at the team’s facility meeting with coaches and front office personnel.
But he has not signed a contract. Yet.
Green Bay Packers Legend LeRoy Butler Thinks Aaron Rodgers Could Lead the Pittsburgh Steelers to the Super Bowl
If Rodgers does sign with the Steelers, he would be joining a team that went 10-7 last season and, aside from adding a quarterback, have done everything necessary to improve their offense for 2025. Most notably, they traded for two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver DK Metcalf.
However, both Wilson and backup Justin Fields have signed elsewhere for the upcoming season.
Should Rodgers join Pittsburgh, they could take advantage of a shaky AFC North and make the NFL Playoffs. Should that happen, well, the four-time NFL MVP would have a chance to win a Super Bowl with the team he helped defeat 15 years ago in Super Bowl XLV.
And Hall of Fame safety LeRoy Butler, who spent his entire NFL career in Green Bay, thinks that is what will happen if Rodgers decides to play one more season:
“If he comes in, I think you have a legitimate chance to get to the Super Bowl,” Butler told Ty Dunne on the ‘Go Long TD’ podcast. “If Aaron Rodgers goes to Pittsburgh, you expect them to be in the Super Bowl. They’ll be my Super Bowl pick if he goes there.”
Of course, this would give Rodgers the opportunity to do something Butler saw up close and personal in his own career. Denver Broncos legend John Elway ended his career by winning the Super Bowl in consecutive seasons, the first coming against Butler and the Packers in Super Bowl XXXII.
That being said, Butler believes that Rodgers does have to change some things about himself if the marriage with Pittsburgh is going to work.
“Aaron gotta give up the control, and I think Pittsburgh is the only team that can do that. He has to give up the control and really become not the bird that comes in with the worm feeding one of the babies, he has to be one of the babies, with his mouth open. Want to receive coaching and receive the whole team concept, and the only place that can do that is Pittsburgh because Tomlin ain’t going for what the Jets went for.”
The Jets, of course, basically gave Rodgers everything that he wanted. And all it did was set their franchise back several years. They went from 7-10 in the season in which he did not play due to injury to 5-12 in the season that he played. And the decline happened despite them going out to get Davante Adams and keeping Nathaniel Hackett on staff.
Indeed, it surely seems as if the Steelers are interested in Rodgers, and want him to sign with them. But they also want it to be on their terms. Not his.
