When thinking of an outspoken former Green Bay Packers quarterback, the mind initially wanders to that of three-time MVP passer Aaron Rodgers. A Super Bowl-winning quarterback, Rogers became one of the best players in NFL history while donning the green and yellow. However, during his twilight years with the Green Bay Packers and New York Jets, Rogers made headlines following his questionable antics and quotes displayed during national interviews.
On Friday, a former Green Bay Packers quarterback went viral for calling out his old defensive coaches, but it was not Aaron Rodgers. It’s safe to say that Green Bay’s backup quarterback in 2021, Kurt Benkert, was not fond of then-first-year defensive coordinator Joe Berry.
Former Green Bay Packers QB Calls Out 2021 Defensive Coordinator
Like many defensive coordinators during practice, the play caller prefers it when the offense does what they are told. However, in 2021, backup quarterback Kurt Benkert of the Green Bay Packers did not like to listen to then-DC Joe Berry or his staff. Benkert took to Twitter, calling out Barry and many of the team’s defensive coaches. The Virginia product and then backup quarterback to Aaron Rodgers refused to throw in triple coverage when asked. Benkert’s refusal was twofold. The undrafted quarterback looked to avoid putting poor plays on film, especially with him likely on the open market next season. He also wanted to avoid throwing interceptions that he believed an opposing quarterback would not make on Sundays.
Benkert played five years in the NFL but never attempted a pass. He finished his career with two rush attempts, both with the Green Bay Packers, for negative one yard. He has since transitioned to media, working with the prominent fantasy football app Sleeper. Meanwhile, after three seasons, Barry was out as the team’s defensive coordinator. He is now the linebackers coach and Run Game Coordinator for the Miami Dolphins, while Green Bay housed a top-10 defense under first-year DC Jeff Hafley.
