Following the departure of Joe Barry as the Packers defensive coordinator, the Green Bay Packers have hired Jeff Hafley as their 2024 defensive coordinator.
Hafley has coaching experience in the NFL as a defensive backs coach for the Cleveland Browns, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the San Francisco 49ers. In total, he has coached seven years in the league.
More than just a change of personnel, Hafley’s addition is a change of defensive philosophy for the Packers:
The differences between base schemes aren’t so pronounced as they were in 2009, when the Packers made the transition to 3-4 under Dom Capers. Currently, teams run nickel defense most of the time, so they play with four down linemen either way. However, there are structural differences in alignment and gap strategy.
But Jeff Hafley’s differences when compared to Joe Barry go much beyond the base. The Packers will have a single-high centric defense — goodbye, two-high/quarters-heavy defense. And Hafley is also much more aggressive to send blitzes and to apply man coverage.via AtoZ Sports
One complain against Barry was how he failed to utilize the individual strengths of the Packers secondary personnel on hand, but who knows how many of them will return next season. Either way, the Packer defense is going to be taking a different direction as the pressure mounts on LaFleur for more post-season success.
