Following the departure of Joe Barry as the Packers defensive coordinator, the Green Bay Packers have hired Jeff Hafley as their 2024 defensive coordinator.
Hafley has coaching experience in the NFL as a defensive backs coach for the Cleveland Browns, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the San Francisco 49ers. In total, he has coached seven years in the league.
More than just a change of personnel, Hafley’s addition is a change of defensive philosophy for the Packers:

The differences between base schemes aren’t so pronounced as they were in 2009, when the Packers made the transition to 3-4 under Dom Capers. Currently, teams run nickel defense most of the time, so they play with four down linemen either way. However, there are structural differences in alignment and gap strategy.
But Jeff Hafley’s differences when compared to Joe Barry go much beyond the base. The Packers will have a single-high centric defense — goodbye, two-high/quarters-heavy defense. And Hafley is also much more aggressive to send blitzes and to apply man coverage.

One complain against Barry was how he failed to utilize the individual strengths of the Packers secondary personnel on hand, but who knows how many of them will return next season. Either way, the Packer defense is going to be taking a different direction as the pressure mounts on LaFleur for more post-season success.

Not exactly the “name guy” everyone was hoping for. The rumor was they offered it to Christian Parker last weekend. Maybe he wanted to interview elsewhere and hedge his bet therefore reluctant to take the job right away. It wouldn’t be the first time. Supposedly Hafley sought out LaFleur. It’ll be interesting if the 32 year old Parker gets a DC job elsewhere.
Looks like he hired another one of his buddies. Never heard of the guy before this hiring. Who knows, maybe it works out.
Wasabi Fenway Bowl
The what?

Seems like our new DC will have about a 3 year leash if recent history prevails.
Pettine – 3 years (strike one)
Barry – 3 years (strike two)
Hafley – ?
Who knows, maybe he can come in and scheme a top 5, top 10 defense, possibly providing a scoring defense of less than 20 perhaps..
Maybe he can improve the turnover differential from zero in 2023 to something in the positive double digits.
One thing is for damn sure, as it has been for some years with me…
Show me, don’t tell me.
Speaking of double digits, maybe he can coach up Gary to get double digit sacks in his (6th) season as a highly paid ‘elite’ edge rusher.
Would be kind of nice if he was a playmaker for his 24 million/year average. 🤷♂️
How about if he just showed up in the playoffs and i don’t know, did something?
But maybe that’s just me being crazy, i figured for 24 million a year we could get something better than slightly above average.

Lastly……
I’m looking for a wager.
I’m gonna go out on a limb and predict the Packers pick a defensive player in the 1st round.
I’m thinking 5 Ben Franklins.
Defensive i win, offense you win.
