The Packers chose Oregon State’s tight end Luke Musgrave as their 42nd overall pick and Jayden Reed, a wide receiver from Michigan State, as their 50th overall pick in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft on Friday.
Luke Musgrave
Green Bay welcomes Musgrave, a tall and agile tight end who has fewer plays under his belt compared to some of his rookie peers. Nevertheless, his smoothness on the field is expected to benefit the Packers when playing across the middle. Injuries and a shortened 2020 season due to COVID led to Musgrave securing only 33 catches between the 2020 and 2022 seasons. However, he had an impressive 2021 season, boasting 22 catches for 304 yards and a touchdown.
Hailing from Bend, Oregon, Musgrave clocked a 4.61 in the 40-yard dash and achieved a 36-inch vertical leap at the NFL Scouting Combine. Among tight ends, he recorded the quickest 10-yard split at 1.54 seconds. His exceptional vertical, 40-yard dash time, and 4.21 pro agility earned him the No. 27 spot on Bruce Feldman’s Freaks List for The Athletic.

On Friday night, Green Bay picked Michigan State’s Jayden Reed as their second choice in the second round, at the 50th overall spot.
Initially, the Packers had the 45th pick but traded it to the Lions in exchange for the 48th selection, gaining an additional fifth-round choice, No. 159, from Detroit. Green Bay then traded the 48th pick to Tampa Bay for the 50th selection, obtaining a sixth-round pick, No. 179, from the Buccaneers.
Reed, a native of Naperville, Illinois, is a 5-foot-11, 187-pound receiver and returner. He began his college career at Western Michigan in 2018, catching 56 passes for 797 yards and eight touchdowns, along with a punt return touchdown. These accomplishments earned him freshman All-America honors before he transferred to Michigan State.
During his last collegiate season, Reed secured 55 catches for 636 yards and five touchdowns, placing second in all categories for the Spartans and earning a spot on the All-Big Ten second team. Additionally, he had two punt returns exceeding 80 yards, which were unfortunately negated by penalties.
The #Packers used the second-round pick (No. 42) they got from the #Jets in the Aaron Rodgers trade on TE Luke Musgrave, and then traded down twice before grabbing Michigan WR Jayden Reed at No. 50. Building the young core around their new QB Jordan Love.

𝗣𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗜𝘀 𝗜𝗻: With pick 50 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, the #Packers are selecting WR Jayden Reed.
The Packers already took TE Luke Musgrave earlier in the 2nd round, then traded twice, with #Lions and #Bucs, now get their guy.

I like the Reed pick more than I like Musgrave. Not excited about spending a high second on a oft injured Tight End that consistently goes down on first contact and has more drops than games played due to catching with his body. Reed may be small but he at least fights for the ball and plays with a bit of fire.
Reed is wiiirrrrrry.
Reed, except for maybe being a little less than 10 pounds lighter has very similar size, speed, and other testing comparisons to Greg Jennings. Positions in the draft were about the same. Even started at same small college.
As I recall, the Packers used the 3rd round pick from the Jets for Brett Favre on Jemichael Finley TE. It’s only fitting they use the Jets pick on Musgrave. Luke Musgrave is as talented as any TE in this class, he fell because of injury but is healthy now. I like the pick but I would have drafted Brian Branch safety at 42 and Musgrave at 45. Jayden Reed will be a slot receiver. Totally different than Watson or Doubs. Definitely a need pick. It’s day three and we still have 9 picks and we’ll need all of them. Cheap labor to fill out the roster. We need a backup QB, RB, a couple of safeties, another WR, backup DL, kicker, just to name a few. So far, so good…
I believe Farve pick traded to NE w #2 pick to get back into first round to get USC linebacker named MATHEWS.
From down the hall…

For all you doubters & haters regarding the Musgrave pick!
Per Packers Wire…..”One of the most athletic tight ends ever (98th percentile). Compares favorably in terms of size and athleticism to Travis Kelce.”

Per Packers Wire…..”One of the most athletic tight ends ever (98th percentile). Compares favorably in terms of size and athleticism to Travis Kelce.”
Well, if Packer Wire says so…..🥱
Travis Kelce?…lol..WOW 😮
I remember a writer comparing Jeff Janis’s combine numbers to Julio Jones……. obsessively.
I also remember no teams in the league wanting Janis and he now changes oil and sells tires.
You have 33rd overall pick Kevin King, who now sits on his couch watching NFL games at 27 years old.
It’s fair to assume he was Gutes pick based on Teds condition. Once his rookie contract ran out, Gute gave him another 6 million to come back and…”do it again” for another year, even after blowing up the Packers/Bucs playoff game.
Money well spent by Gute after Kings All-Pro season of 2020 wher he earned a PFF grade of (gulp) 55.7.
That’s the kind of grade when a player should be sent home to watch games on his couch, so he can’t lose anymore games for his team.
But…maybe Gute knows better, idk.

Listen to me and take notes if you’d like…..
What you did in college effects 2 things, it gets you slotted in the draft, and it gets you paid, based on your slot.
After that, you are just unproven potential.
The NFL is a different animal than college ball, it’s a business and if you can’t perform, the league sends you home sooner or later.
After you sign your contract in the NFL, what you did in college doesn’t mean s*** anymore. You have a clean slate…either to sink or swim.
See J’Marcus Russell, Johnny Manziel, Tony Mandarich, RG3, Ryan Leaf, David Carr, Christian Ponder, Tim Tebow, Baker Mayfield, and the list goes on and on and on.
You are nothing, until you prove yourself in the NFL, and that can only be done, on the field.
************
Have fun, playing the game of…this guy will do this, this guy will do that, that guy will do this. This guy will be a matchup nightmare, that guy will dominate the game, this guy will be a HOF’er.
They will be nothing….until they get on the field and earn it.
If your a Packer fan, the best you can hope for with Gute…
He gets 2 solid starters from the draft, that seems to be his ceiling.
He can finally get some pass catching talent since we’ve been waiting since 2018.
He can find a player from rounds 3-7 in his career.
He might someday draft an offensive skill player in the first round besides someone who sits on the bench for years.
We hope in 5 years, we have more than 1 player on the roster from a draft.
See Gutes 2018 draft.
Lets visit the time machine…..

i agree with that, as i’ve said in the past, King looks frail. No injury would shock me concerning King.

There have been some comments made in the past concerning Mr. Kings injury history in college, and how it has followed him into the NFL. I have read (his) comments how he is long, but he’s frail. I can’t recall the name of who made those comments, but i wish i had the vision and wisdom of this ..dare i say….genius.😎

i know it’s early to call this dude a bust like i have previously, but …c’mon, look at him, he’s a twig. It’s not like this dude didn’t have injury history in college ball. I’d like the think Ted and his staff (Gute) were aware of this and just rolled the dice.
****************
It’s a shame that Gute didn’t realize what i did 5 years ago.
Maybe he would have realized that King was a liability, despite Tommy telling us in the past how good King was playing.

Look…I’m not saying i’m always right.
Nor am i saying i’ve never been wrong.
I can remember that one time back in 2012 😮.
Musgrave is a project, no question,
as fast as Tonyan, but more athletic. He has the NFL pedigree, so that’s a good thing.

What I like about Reed is his concentration when catching the ball and his ability to catch balls in traffic.
