Packers Attack Special Teams

In 2020 the image of JK Scott running side by side with a Jaguars punt returner without making a tackle was arguably the second most cringeworthy play of the Packers regular season. If you agree with that argument you probably also have his sideline dance against the Eagles punt returner as the worst play. Neither opponent highlight real moment involved an attempt to make a tackle by Scott. He was the NFL equivalent of a bullfighter, missing only a red cape.

jk scott | Packers Attack Special Teams
Green Bay Packers’ JK Scott (6) participates in organized team activities Tuesday, May 25, 2021, in Green Bay, Wis.

In the 2020 NFC Championship game his first punt traveled 38 yards and came down at the 27 yard line. That is a decent punt for a high school playoff game but not the NFC Championship. In the Packers first playoff game against the Rams, Scott’s first punt went 37 yards and was downed at the opponent’s 21 yard line. When your job amounts to three punts a game you can’t be less than mediocre 1/3 of the time you are on the field. When I heard that he was taken out of last week’s preseason game due to a cramp, I wondered if there was more to the decision. His last punt as a Packer went for 56 yards to the three yard line, but out-kicked his coverage and gave up an 18 yard return for a net of 38 yards. He was the holder on the missed field goal, perhaps that error was also partly his fault. Packer fans should feel relief tonight. The screaming at his flailing tackles, his shank kicks and slow release are over. Three years of punting roller coaster results are in the past. Bring on the NFL’s highest gross punter for 2020.

corey bojorquez | Packers Attack Special Teams
The Bills’ Tyler Bass kicks a 28-yard field goal against the Ravens as the Bills’ Corey Bojorquez (9) holds the ball.

The track record for the Packers new punter, Corey Bojorquez, is good for punting distance, but he allowed a high number to sail into the end zone. Some stories are reporting his great improvement this preseason but those numbers are inflated by kicking in Denver. Still, the Packers recognized a failed draft pick, cut him loose, and spent draft capital to improve special teams. This is a move, both in recognition and in response that bodes well for the future. Let’s hope the improved Special Teams future starts in New Orleans, or Dallas as coach Sean Payton forecast yesterday due to the current flooding in the gulf states.

To me the most cringe worthy play that Scott was involved in last year did not start as a Scott mistake. The errant snap from Bradley on the second quarter extra point against the Rams should have put both Bradley and Scott on the you must go list. Bradley (bad snap) and Scott (shovel pass to Cosby) in combination almost resulted in Cosby being seriously injured. Bradley has had his share of errant snaps. I would bet Bradley at the most only has one more bad regular season or practice snap before he is cut. It is interesting the Packers signed Wirtel (long snapper) to the practice squad. Wirtel like Corey B was on the Rams preseason team. They have probably worked together on several exchanges (punts, Xtra points, field goal) in the Rams 2021 preseason camp

I just hope the Packer special teams ——- are special for a change. This unit has been near the bottom of the league for years. Crosby is the rock of this unit. Even if the STs’ finish in the middle of the standings, it would be considered good progress. Paul, you probably wrote your article before it was determined that the Pack will play the Saints in Jacksonville at 3:25pm ;;;;;; Dallas was considered at 1st, but the stadium was already booked that day.

He had one good boomer that got him some recognition from Pat McAfee and that was about it. Always thought he needed a bunch more meat on his bones and thought they might work with him on conditioning a bit more. Yeah, he’s a punter but he is (was) an NFL player so work on looking the part. When you look like a high-schooler I guess it is kind of hard to justify a tackle attempt on a running freight train but man, he whiffed at it when he could muster a … try.
    –
Maybe some lessons to be learned are: try not to pick a college kid from a southern conference to punt in Green Bay if cold weather kicking is important, and if the school is an offensive powerhouse the punter might not be getting much quality work.

Recipe for success. All kickoffs are touchbacks and all punts are fair caught. Why did Buffalo let this guy go is my question? Just kick it high and it has to be fair caught. The Packers have not had a decent punter in a decade. Maybe this guy is the answer.

Ten years is about right. Remember when they sent Jon Ryan packing for Derrick Frost? I remember driving in the car listening to game day coverage and hearing the news of the move and screaming at the radio. Ryan went on to a pretty decent and long career with Seattle after that and Derrick Frost,….not so much.

Jon Ryan had been a very good punter for us and he was due for a big paycheck. Management said no and they’ve regretted it ever since. When you find a good kicker or punter, it’s just easier to pay them than to be constantly looking for one. They learned their lesson because we’ve kept Mason Crosby forever. I suspect his tackling, or lack there of, was the deciding factor in JK Scott’s release. He had the leg but not the consistency. That could be coached. The fear of contact. Not so much.

You sure Princess?…in 3 years, it still wasn’t coached?

Or….they tried to coach him, but it didn’t take.
      .
      Bottom line….it could be coached?
Is that why they gave him his walking papers?

Are you still upset you were wrong about Benkert? But you gave him a better grade than Jordan Love. His stats better. Why isn’t he on the 53? I base my evaluations on what I see. I trust what I see. I comment on what I see. You on the other hand, base your evaluations on stats and what you read in the media. That’s the difference between you and I. I make my own decisions, you have to have others to tell you what to do. We’ll see who’s correct. I see Jordan Love with a bright future. The game wasn’t too big for him. He had good pocket presence. He has a quick release. He made some good throws and some he’d like to have back. That’s how a 22 year old QB learns. I don’t give a fuck about his stats. And neither does LaFleur or Gutekunst. He showed me what I needed to see. He’s got a chance to be as good as Herbert. You want Love to fail because that means your girlfriend will be gone if he doesn’t. Well honey, that’s life in the NFL. Brady didn’t finish with New England and Rodgers won’t finish in Green Bay. Go follow the Raiders next year if you love tinker bell so much. No one will think less of you. No one thinks much of you now.

Hey, sweetheart! JK Scott got a tryout with the Dolphins today. I guess Miami didn’t get your in depth scouting report on our former kicker. I’m still amazed Kurt Benkert somehow made it thru wavers after your preseason “grades.” These NFL GM’s, they sure can’t judge talent like you can! Stay special my friend…..

I wonder what would be happening now if GB had drafted TJ Watt, like EVERYONE except TT wanted them to. I hear he wants $30M per year. Can any team afford to pay a Defensive player that kind of scratch, no matter how many sacks they get? Bosa now makes $27M does he really make them that much better?

      Hers’s a couple possible scenario’s….
      .
      1) We are trying to decide whether to keep him, or trade him out, after this season under a franchise tag
      .
      2) We very well may have won the Super Bowl last season, because the name Kevin King would never have been spoken.

I honestly think missing Watt had a domino effect that put us into our current cap situation. If we had Watt, we wouldn’t have needed to crack open the piggy bank on Z AND Preston, and we could have used the Gary pick at #12 on Brian Burns to have someone alongside Kenny C (something freaking EVERYONE was saying, just like with Watt.)

    .

Picking Watt would have allowed us to draft higher at other positions of need – like a WR, MLB, or as I already mentioned the D line.

    .

Packers fans bitched for years about Ted being stingy in free agency, but Gute went too far in the opposite direction. Dude went on an OLB shopping spree, and spent our highest draft pick in ages on a guy who rode the bench behind those starters. And now we’re dealing with the fallout of needing to pay too many people, with core players like Jaire & Jenkins having contracts looming.

    .

Look – we’re all armchair GM’s here, and hindsight is always 2020. But if there’s one thing I think most of us can agree on, it’s that the best teams are well rounded. Are we a good team? Yup. Great team? I’d say so. But I still don’t think it’s possible to get over the hump when you completely neglect entire positional groups. And we’ve been doing that for years.

    .

To be honest – I hope I’m proved wrong this year, but I don’t think I will be.

    • Avatar for Ferris Ferris says:

Yes I can see that. We all know they should have taken him…$30M for a pass rusher still seems steep to me. Guess we will never know what would have happened. The Vince B pick worked out well though.

  9. Avatar for Tom M Tom M says:

TJ Watt or Z Smith? I see no real difference. Both very good and both got paid. You can only afford one. I don’t recall anyone, fans or media, pushing for Brian Burns. And I got vested pretty heavily in that draft. We lost to the Bucs because Rodgers came up small in the 4th quarter and Kevin King gave up some big plays. We needed a corner. Is Eric Stokes the answer? He didn’t beat out King in preseason and King didn’t play. You can’t pay all your core guys the highest amount at their position. Some guys will have to walk like Linsley. It’s easier to find a center than a LT. It’s why you let Linsley walk and keep Bakhtiari. It’s easier to find a WR than a shut down corner. It’s why they’ll let Adams walk and sign Alexander to a contract extension. I see this team as good enough for Rodgers to get to the SB. Even he’s said it’s SB or bust. And if we bust, look for the team to be vastly different next year.

Aaron Rodgers was a first round draft pick. Aaron Rodgers sat on the bench for three years. By your own definition then, Aaron Rodgers is a bust. Jordan Love will start in 2022. No one will care that he sat for two years if he’s the next Justin Herbert. In case you haven’t noticed Z Smith has a back injury and may not play. I wonder who could possibly start in his place? Alexander, Gary, Savage, Jenkins, Dillion, Myers, Newman will all start. As will Amari Rodgers and Eric Stokes just as soon as Cobb and King get injured. Alexander and Jenkins aren’t just starters but pro bowl players. And Savage isn’t far behind. As usual, you have no clue as to what your talking about.

Yes..Aaron Rodgers sat on the bench for 3 years.
          .

Your bullshitting me, right? You honestly think Jonathan Gavin or Chancey Rivers starts ahead of Rashan Gary? This is why your better off keeping your mouth shut. Matt LaFleur didn’t play any of his starters in preseason. While Gavin and Rivers got extensive playing time. What can we conclude from that? Gavin and Rivers are backups. While Gary is a starter. You might have been able to see that if you didn’t have your head so far up Kurt Benkert ass. Ok, maybe not. You want to focus just on first round picks? Fine. Gutekunst has had 5. Three will start. While Stokes will start just as soon as Kevin King gets injured. I give him until the end of September. Jordan Love starts next year. And we already have two starters out of this years draft class without Stokes. Most Packer fans would be happy by all this, but not you. When Aaron Rodgers fails, you have to have someone to blame. And for you it will always be the evil Brian Gutekunst.

            ********************
            Two starters without Stokes?
One is starting because of Linsley’s departure (no choice other than to shuffle Patrick around or select Hansen) out of necessity.
The other because of Bakhtiari’s injury. Newman will be on the bench when Bakh comes back.
I would hope Meyer could start as a center being a 2nd round pick coming out of Ohio State.
Citing the fact Linsley was a 5th round pick.
But that’s what Ted did…drafted Pro Bowl and All Pro lineman out of the 4th and 5th rounds…Gute, hasn’t been as skilled, so far.
Two rookies on the O line isn’t ideal. But no one would expect you to know that.
            ****************
            Now…back to your mental disabilities….
            .
Did you just proclaim (again) that Gary is a starter?
            .
Now….. if Z Smith couldn’t start because of injury, then yes, Gary would be the replacement starter for that specific game, that is how it works Einstein as a 2nd team bench player.
That is his job as a back up bench player, If the starter is out…fill his spot until he comes back.
            Any questions on that?
            .
A bench player starting for an injured starter, is not classified as a “starter”
He’s still a back up, replacing a starter until the starter is healthy.
Are you starting to piece this together yet?
            .
Yes…Stokes would start if King got injured, that is his job as a back up bench player. If the starter gets injured, he fills in for the starter.
            You following along here?
            .
Seriously now….this shit is simple and basic, like recognizing sarcasm.

Or…more realistically, we have one starter out of this draft (Meyers). Who still hasn’t taken a NFL snap.
A starter is a starter because they have proven themselves on the field. How about we wait and watch how this unfolds when Meyer and Newman suit up for an actual game?… and take their first NFL snaps….Would that be a good idea Princess?
            .
Now, IF…. (when) Bakhtiari comes back, and the Packers designate Lucas Patrick to the bench instead of replacing Neuman at right guard, then in that scenario, Newman would be an actual starter. But…that has to happen first, doesn’t it?
            .
Now…i understand that your definition of a starter, and a back up bench player starting for an injured starter is blurred and confusing.

And that’s how you get to start in this league. Either someone gets hurt or someone leaves in FA. It’s called life in the NFL. Saying Jonathan Gavin or Chancey Rivers will start over Rashan Gary isn’t sarcasm, that’s just pure stupidity. And I never said they were drafted in 2021. I said they’re starters. This is the bullshit you pull. First you say, “Gutekunst can’t have another first round pick on the bench.” So I list all his starters. Then you say well, I’m only taking about the first round. So I clarify. 3 out of 5 right now. And all 5 by next year. Now your say you just meant just the 2021 draft. Then I clarify again. Yes, but the only reason Myers is starting is because Linsley left. Well no shit! Of course that’s why he’s starting! Because you can’t pay him 62.5 million which makes him the highest paid center in the NFL! Every time your proven you wrong you come back and say that’s not what I said. It’s your typical bullshit.

Let’s depart from Tommy’s dumbing down of totalpackers for a change of pace.
    .
How bad is the cap situation in 2022?
    .
This 2021 season, the Packers have 5.6 million in dead cap money. Including $491.000 from Devin Funchess.
    .
In 2022, it’s wildly recognized that both P. Smith and Rodgers are assumed gone.
That will make this years 5.6 million look like pocket change.
    .
In trading and/or releasing Rodgers and Smith, the Packers will have 34 million in dead cap cash in 2022, just from those two.
And there will be more with the Packers needing to sign key players to new deals and get under the cap.
    .
If you include Z. Smith to that scenario…the Packers would have 46 million in dead cap money, from 3 players.
    .
The down the road pitfalls of going on a drunken one week free agent spending spree.

  13. Avatar for Tom M Tom M says:

Aaron Rodgers counts 46 million against the cap next year. 19 million if we trade him. You can say it’s Z Smith all you want. But that statement is as accurate as your preseason grades and your proclamation that we’ll keep three QB’s. It’s also why he’ll never be the GOAT. He’s more interest in money. Then blames everyone else on why he doesn’t win championships. Enjoy your farewell tour. It starts Sunday.

    • Avatar for PF4L PF4L says:

      Sigh….JFC, you again?
      .
The subject was dead cap money (pay attention)
Rodgers dead cap money is 26.847 million, if cut or traded before June 1st.
      P. Smith is 7.25 million
      Z. Smith is 12.38 million
      Do the math dumbass.
      .
Z Smith? What statement did i make? You off your meds?
All i said was he was more dead money if he was cut. (12.3 million) added to 34 million.

I’m sure some of you remember the story i read about, and then commented in here about Preston Smith going to LeFleur and requesting that he be used only as a pass rusher, telling LeFleur he no longer wants to drop back in coverage.
    .
Here is an article that sheds some light on that subject by Bill Huber
    http://www.si.com/nfl/packers/news/preston-smith-mike-smith-bounce-back
    .
With what is going on about Z Smith and his unhappiness with his contract, coupled with the Preston Smith story above.
It’s not surprising that the Packer players didn’t vote either Smith as respective Captains on defense.
They voted in Amos and Clark.
    .
Is Z. Smiths back injury related to his contract unhappiness?
Hard to say, but this injury has been going on awhile.
    .
In related news…if LaFleur keeps Z. Smith out of the opener, that means that Rashan Gary as the 2nd team back up, will start in his place.
To not get that twisted….that doesn’t mean Gary is now one of the starting OLB’s. He’s filling in for a injured starter.
    Some….need that explained apparently.
    .
Preston Smith is now on the injury report, apparently he suffered a head laceration and needed stitches, i’m guessing.
Don’t know if he fell down….or what.

    • Avatar for Tom M Tom M says:

No one gives two shits who the team “captains” are. All they do is go out for the coin toss. Vital, I know. Now that’s sarcasm. Saying Jonathan Galvan will start is not. Z Smith’s back injury has nothing to do with his contract. He’ll be a FA after this season. He needs a big year to get another big contract. No one pays big money for a player with a bad back. Your already backpedaling on Rashad Gary. What a surprise. He’ll start this week. As usual your fixated on something stupid like depth charts. So if Gary has a big game does he go back to the bench because your “depth chart” says so? That’s how most NFL players get their chance because of injury. And no, no one remembers a story you read. We don’t care. Do you ever have an original thought? All you do is regurgitate what someone else says.

      • Avatar for PF4L PF4L says:

:)…You go ahead and stick with that story…Princess.
        .
Gee Gomer…IF Gary had a big game, he’ll stay a starter and Z. Smith will be benched?
        Is that your logic? LOL
        .
So you say no one gives two shits if they are not Captain?
        Did you take a poll?
Or is Tommy just always right…even when he’s wrong?

Did everyone see the game last night? Brady once again proved why he’s the GOAT and Aaron Rodgers is not. That game was a dog fight from start to finish. And you just knew Brady would win the game with the ball in his hands and less than two minutes to play. Moreover, you didn’t need stats, or depth charts, or catch rates, to know it either. Aaron Rodgers doesn’t win that game. He can’t come from behind like that. And before you start your “ it takes a team” bullshit. Just remember Brady works for a lot less because he’s more motivated by winning championships than he is about stats and awards. Which is why you love Rodgers so much. You both love your stats. Almost as much as you love to blame others when he comes up small in big games. Brady would rather take less so there’s more money to sign players to help him. While Rodgers ego has to be the highest paid player. You cannot bitch because your the highest paid player in the NFL and then say I don’t have enough help. There’s only so much money to go around. Rodgers counts 46 million against a 208 million dollar cap next year and 19 million even if he’s traded. Brady would never handcuff his team that way. Rodgers bitches because he wants more input. But the saw cuts both ways. He wants more input but doesn’t sign team friendly deals to give management more flexibility. The only way the Packers pay him 46 million next year is if he wins the SB. Which means he’s got to start winning games like Brady did last night. No excuses.

I didn’t watch the game Thursday because I could give two shits about the Cowboys or Tom Brady. From what I hear, Dallas’s kicker missed two field goals and an extra point. That’s seven points off of the board. If he makes those kicks Dallas wins. But instead, somehow Dallas missing three kicks makes Tom Brady the GOAT.
      .
Just like when LaFluer decided to kick a field goal with two minutes left being down by 8, essentially pissing the entire game away because all Tampa had to do was get A SINGLE FIRST DOWN when the Packers defense already proved they couldn’t stop a damn thing. Guess what? Tampa got a first down. Game over. OMG ISN’T TOM BRADY JUST MAGNIFICENT! ONLY TOM BRADY CAN MAKE FIRST DOWNS BECAUSE HE’S THE GOAT!
      .
Even if Rodgers took less money the front office would actually have to spend it wisely. LOL. First off, there is no fucking way the Packers would have took on Antonio Brown, LeSean McCoy, Leonard Fournette, Ndamukong Suh, Jason Pierre-Paul, and Rob Gronkowski all in the same year, if ever. No. Fucking. Way.
      .
With the names I just mentioned, all of their contracts in 2020 add up to about $37.25 million. There’s no way Rodgers gets paid $37 million more a year than Brady. So you can stop pretending Brady taking less money than Rodgers is funding the rest of the team to championships. That is Tampa Bay’s front office going ALL IN. Not like when the Packers say they’re going all in because they drafted three bench warmers with their top four picks and signed a middle of the road WR who decided to sit out for the season.

Just like when I said Rashan Gary would start and Kurt Benkert would be cut. This is it sweetheart for both Smith’s, Davante Adams, and Aaron Rodgers. Along with several others. Like a camp arm throwing a few passes in an absolutely meaningless preseason game and then proclaiming he’ll make the roster. Or saying there’s no way Rashan Gary could start because of some imaginary bullshit depth chart. Z Smith will be cut after the season. I don’t need anyone to tell me that. Just like Rodgers will be traded and Davante will sign elsewhere. We’re not paying Rodgers 46 million next year just so he can be in the running for another meaningless MVP award. I said he got a tryout. I never said he signed. By your astute player evaluation with his slow delivery and poor hang times why would the Dolphins even bother? JK Scott is 25, 6’6” has a big leg and went to Alabama. He’s also wildly inconsistent. He’ll get multiple tryouts and he’ll be in camp next year with someone. NFL teams don’t waste their time on players that aren’t talented. Kickers get bounced around a lot. Our current kicker is on his third team in 12 months. I’m not saying he’ll make it. But I’m not going to dismiss him out of hand like you have. And neither has the NFL.
