Packers CB Kevin King is Now Active in Camp, Listed as Starter

Kevin King has a lot to prove going into this 2021 season. His mediocre performance last season along with injury has put the spotlight on him since his off-season one-year deal with the team.

King attended college football at Washington, playing safety and cornerback, earning All-Pac-12 honorable mention twice. Following four seasons at Washington, King attended the NFL Scouting Combine and impressed — coming out of the process as a projected first or second round pick. King was selected by the Packers in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft and was fourth on the depth chart to begin his rookie year. Since then, his name has become more relevant in the media and in sports betting, such as bet-fl.com

After Devon House went down with a quad injury early in the 2017 season, King made his first career start. King dealt with several injuries his rookie season, including a concussion, and shoulder injury. He finished the season with 28 tackles in nine games. The injury bug plagued King in 2018 as well, missing weeks three and four with a groin injury, weeks nine through 12 with a hamstring injury and was on injured reserve the final four weeks of the season. King had 14 tackles and one interception in only six games.

King rebounded in 2019, stayed healthy and played in 15 regular season games. He came up big with an interception in the end zone in the game against the Vikings and also picked off Dak Prescott in a win against the Cowboys three weeks later. King had 65 tackles and five interceptions for the season and six tackles in two post season games.

Last season, King missed five games but was effective in the other 11 games that he played and started, recording 56 tackles. In two playoff games, King had 12 tackles, but was torched in coverage against the Buccaneers, allowing two touchdown passes. In addition, he was called for a pass interference penalty last in the game that kept a Tampa Bay drive alive.

Despite the poor playoff performance, King was deemed valuable enough by the Packers to sign him to a 1-year deal for $6 million on March 26, 2021. Although King hadn’t practiced so far in camp until today(due to a non-football injury), he is listed as the starter at cornerback according to a recently released unofficial depth chart. It appears that first-round pick Eric Stokes, who is listed at the backup, is right on King’s heels. Should King fail to improve over last season, it will be more a matter of when and not if, Stokes takes over as the starter.

King was listed on the “reserve/non football injury list”.
Then i heard he had a hamstring issue.
    .
Maybe the Packers wanted to keep him and Z out of camp for whatever reason.
Still haven’t heard anything on Z.
    .
Is Z a “hold in” wanting a new deal?

Mr. Joseph Bonham nailed it over 2 years ago.

There have been some comments made in the past concerning Mr. Kings injury history in college, and how it has followed him into the NFL. I have read his comments how he is long, but he’s frail. I can’t recall the name of who made those comments, but i wish i had the vision and wisdom of this ..dare i say….genius. :)

Let’s go Eric Stokes. We’re all pulling for you.

    1. Mick August 13, 2021

By signing a 1 year deal this offseason, King gets another chance to prove he deserves a big long term deal; but I don’t think it will be in GB. He has missed 23 out of 64 games during his 4 years with the team. Shoulder and repeated lower body injuries have defined his career. He knows his future is on the line. With GB in salary cap hell, and considering Kings’ injury history; he’s playing his final year in GB. I agree Mitch; we’re all pulling for Stokes.

      1. PF4L August 13, 2021

Yes Sir…When the team spends a #1 pick on your position, it’s not a bad idea to put some good game tape together.
        .
I think it’s safe to assume that no one wants to see Stokes succeed more than Gute.
        .
Unfortunately, for the team and Packer Nation, this move was made a year too late (minimum) after the damage was done.
Lets just hope Stokes learns from Jaire.

I think Minnesota just cut a 1st round db from 2020?

At least Gute picked Love over the db that was cut by Minnesota…

  4. Tom M August 12, 2021

Kevin King was drafted because we desperately needed a big, physical corner. We had just got our asses handed to us by Julio Jones and the Falcons in yet another NFCC loss. When most opposing WR’s were open by at least 5 yards on every play, or so it seemed. While King never developed into a number one corner. His playing style complements that of Jaire Alexander, a true shut down corner. Where Kevin King only has to cover the 2nd or 3rd team’s WR. The only thing King has to accomplish is to stay healthy in camp. And if that means he doesn’t play in preseason or practices very little, that’s just fine. Eric Stokes needs all the reps he can get, just like Jordan Love needs his. We know what we have with Kevin King and Aaron Rodgers. 17 games this year is going to be a grind.

    1. PF4L August 14, 2021

      I agree….
      .
With King, he closed that gap.
      .
Now when he covers a wide receiver, they are only open by 4 yards.
      *********************************
“The only thing King has to accomplish is to stay healthy in camp, cover a receiver instead of staring back at the QB, learn how to time his jump to where he might actually be involved in the play, tackle better in the open field, stop the on field celebrations defended a pass that was clearly uncatchable, but acting like he broke it up, stop getting burned by the receiver so quick when he presses the receiver up at the line, he’s better off playing 12 yards off the receiver that way at least delaying the inevitable….of getting beat.
      .
But yea, otherwise just stay healthy, that’s the only thing he needs to accomplish.

      Great post!

The nice thing about King is his versatility, if he fails to perform well in one NFCCG, he learns not to keep making the same mistakes.
        .
In the next NFCCG, he’ll exhibit all new ways to fail in a NFCCG.
        .

This is where you always get yourself into trouble PF4L. When you try and challenge me. You have to have a scapegoat for Aaron Rodgers failures. Kevin King is your current whipping boy. Was Kevin King on the field when Aaron Rodgers sucked a bag of dicks and couldn’t score a TD with first and goal at the 8 yard line in the 4th quarter of the NFCC game? Guess he’s not the GOAT after all. We won 26 regular season games the previous two seasons with King starting opposite Alexander for most of them. King had a back injury going into that game. He played anyway because we had little else on the depth chart behind him. Kyle Fuller could have helped but your girlfriend was too busy being a diva and trying to posture his way out of town. How’d that workout for him? Now we’re left with a rookie corner and the health of Kevin King starting opposite Alexander. Thanks assist GM Aaron Rodgers. At least we’ve got Randall Cobb who can run his routes with a walker. Just remember, “its the people that make the organization.” Yeah, sure, all the old ones who can’t play anymore.

“King had a back injury going into that game. He played anyway because we had little else on the depth chart behind him.”

And i’m sure that’s Rodgers fault somehow right Princess?
            .
You clearly haven’t gotten the message yet.
            .
Teams win as a team, or they lose as a team.
            .
This team hasn’t been good enough to win.
            .
If your best option is putting a injured cornerback on the field in a NGCCG, maybe….you’re not ready to win, as a team. No matter whose fault that was.
            .
In the game Brady had a 77 passer rating. Against the right side of our defense (King) he had a 140 passer rating.
Last i heard Tom Brady is a fairly smart QB, i have to wonder if he’s smart enough to attack the weak part of a defense.
            .
            Hmmm…That’s a head scratcher isn’t it?
            ******************************************
            BTW…thanks for the laugh…lol

          2. Tom M August 14, 2021

Kevin King does not proclaim himself to be the GOAT. Kevin King didn’t spend the offseason acting like a little bitch trying to get his candy apple ass out of town. So it’s about the team, huh? Except of course when it isn’t. Aaron Jones scores 19 TD’s and you state “that’s all Aaron Rodgers.” “He set that all that up.” Bullshit! Your messiah complex gets in the way of your critical thinking. That is if you ever had any. Which I doubt. I’m sure Kevin King will be the first to tell you he didn’t play very well in the NFCC game. But tinker bell will never admit he played like shit in the 4th quarter of that game. His old man ass could have run it in for a TD but that would have meant he’d have to take a hit. And at 37, it would have hurt! Look, if everybody’s sweetheart after the game said, “we didn’t get it done. It all starts with me. I need to play better, I need to be better.” You know man up and take responsibility. Instead he pouts and postures. Points the finger at Brian Gutekunst while clueless fans look to blame Kevin King. As long as Aaron Rodgers players for the Packers, you’ll always need players like Kevin King to blame when Rodgers comes up short. Now, I could talk about your mom or your sister. But you seem infatuated with your niece. I’m sure there’s nothing inappropriate going on there…

          5. Tom M August 15, 2021

But your still posting so my work here isn’t done just yet. Bart Starr was a true champion. Never a stat whore himself. He just played big in big games. Think the “Ice Bowl”, both SB’s, NFC championship games. Lombardi called the plays and he ran them. There was never any of this diva shit. And there was no tolerance for finger pointing. Bart Starr has more championships than both your little darlings (Favre, Rodgers) combined!!

This is it for Aaron Rodgers. He either gets it done or he gets his old man ass shipped to the AFC West where he’ll spend his golden years playing second fiddle to Patrick Mahomes. Never again to sniff a SB. And already you and your girlfriends are making excuses for him. We still have Kevin King, we don’t have a second WR, the OL isn’t good enough. Gutekunst is a terrible GM. The shit you girls spew never stops. Either Aaron Rodgers is good enough to elevate an already good team to be a champion. Or he’s a glorified Kirk Cousins. So which is it? Evidently you ladies don’t have a lot of confidence in tinker bell either. Already lining up your excuses. Honing your talking points. Preparing for a January collapse. Now, it’s all about the team! The team isn’t good enough. That would make Aaron Rodgers not good enough. But that’s blasphemy!! So we have to blame the evil Kevin King. Sure ladies. Go back to your Aaron Rodgers porn mag that’s chalked full of all his stats!

And if by calling me a “cunt” you think I’m suppose to curl up in my sock drawer and sleep for days. Then you, Cheesy, and MMSUCKS truly are pussies….

          7. Stiggy August 15, 2021

Lombardis players also shoveled driveways I the off season for income. His players were also denied water at practice to toughen them up…and not a single one of them today could probably even suit up for a mid major d1 program. It was a different era. It really wasn’t even the same sport.

Quote Lombardi all you want…but don’t compare the success of the ancient packers to succeeding in the modern nfl.

          8. Tom M August 15, 2021

Stiggy, there’s no doubt the game is different. Times have changed. Regardless, Lombardi’s boys didn’t go around telling us how wonderful they were. Even in today’s game actions speaks louder than words. Ever here Tom Brady or Joe Montana go on a podcast saying they should be in the conversation to be the GOAT? Bold statements require bold action. And first and goal at the 8 yard line required bold action. Rodgers can talk the talk but not walk the walk. Now, if Rodgers had maned up and said “look, I didn’t get it done, it all starts with me, I’ve got to be better.” Then fine, I’m ok with that, we’ll get them next time. You know, be a leader and take ownership. Instead we immediately get this bullshit about “ I don’t know where I’ll be next year.” And seven months of drama starts. For me losing that game isn’t the issue. Shit happens and the best team doesn’t always win. That game could have gone either way. It’s the ensuing dog and pony show that followed that pissed me off. Terry Bradshaw gets it when he called Aaron Rodgers “weak”. Do you truly think Aaron Rodgers can take over a playoff game and come from behind in the 4th quarter and win? I don’t. And neither do all the girls here at the Aaron Rodgers fan club. The season hasn’t even started and they’ve already started blaming Kevin King. Or this team isn’t good enough. Which makes Aaron Rodgers not good enough. The cycle never ends. Aaron Rodgers is the GOAT but they’ve always got an excuse ready why he can’t win it all. Which is why I say trade him. Let him go elsewhere just like Favre so he can never win it all with someone else.

          9. PF4L August 15, 2021

I remember how savvy he was the first season when he “injured” himself, coincidentally the times the clock needed to stop…
