Back in May 2018, the Supreme Court ruled that the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act violated the 10th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The abolishing of this Act did not automatically mean sports betting became legal across the United States. However, it did mean each individual state now had the right to pass statutes and legalize sports gambling within their state boundaries.
It was a huge moment for both sports betting fans and betting companies in the United States. New Jersey, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania were among the regions to act quickly and move to legalize online betting within their respective states.
Some states, such as those above, were fast and they now offer a wide variety of online betting options. Others were not so quick out of the blocks, including Michigan. That left many people asking the question, ‘when is online betting going live in Michigan?’
The state of Michigan had long been working hard to provide legalized retail and mobile sports betting, which will be welcomed news for Packers fans. In fact, you can trace their efforts back to 2015 and in March 2020 the first retail sportsbook started to accept their first bets. Unfortunately, the introduction of sports betting started slowly for Michigan as the three bookies opened their premises inside casinos in Detroit. However, as soon as they opened their doors the casino and sportsbooks were forced to close them due to the outbreak of coronavirus.
The good news is that the premises have since been allowed to open in a limited capacity and the people of Michigan have been able to legally bet on sports inside a casino. The next step for Michigan will be to offer online betting but this may have to wait until the end of 2020 or the first months of 2021. Speaking in August, The Associated Press reported a spokesperson for the Michigan Gaming Control Board saying, ‘it will take about a year to write and finalize rules and regulations for online gambling, which includes sports betting’.
Despite the wait, the good news is that online betting will be going live in Michigan soon. In the meantime, gamblers can get their fix on the Gamble USA site. This is a fantastic resource showcasing the many online betting options for people residing in the United States. You will find detailed reviews of the latest sportsbook and casino apps, discussing everything they have to offer including current bonuses and promotions. In addition, Gamble USA list all of the available states for each of the betting apps reviewed on their website, making it easy to see if the bookmaker or casino of your choice is available in Michigan.
If Michigan follow in the footsteps of New Jersey and Pennsylvania, you can expect to find BetRivers, BetMGM Sport, DraftKings, FanDuel, SugarHouse, Bet365, Unibet and William Hill among those available. These are some of the leading online betting companies in the world and they could soon be coming to Michigan.
