Nobody has done the things that Patrick Mahomes has on the field. In true sense, he is making as much impact on the ground as he is off it. The Super Bowl MVP is currently famous for the $450m contract extension he has signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. This deal has not only smashed NFL records but throughout the entire sports world.
The deal officially begins in 2022 and will last 10 years. Mahomes is set to earn $45m every year and a total of $503m, including being named NFL MVP and Super Bowl appearances bonuses, check out the below infographic courtesy of Betway outlining the mind blowing numbers behind this contract:
There hasn’t been a contract like this in the entire history of sports in terms of the length of the contract and compensation. Matt Ryan held the previous record for the NFL’s most significant record. His contract, an extension with the Atlanta Falcons, begun in 2018 and was worth $150m for five years.
In 2019, Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks quarterback, signed a $140m four year extension. At the time, it was the most significant yearly compensation in the history of the NFL.
As you probably realize, these previous contracts are nothing compared to Mahomes’ new deal. Mahomes is a current favorite in NFL betting. Mahomes deal is the third one in the history of the league to last more than 6 years and is the second one of more than 10 years.
This is after Michael Vicks 2005, a 10-year deal worth $130m with the Atlanta Falcons. With his deal in place, it is notable that he is not only out-earning NFL players. There have been plenty of big deals in the history of MLB. One good example is the Mike Trout 12-year, $427m deal with the Los Angeles Angels in 2019. He received 35.5m each season.
It notable that the 24-year old has proved that he is worth every penny of his deal. He was first named MVP in 2018 with 50 touchdowns, thereby leading the league.
Additionally, his play led Kansas City to its first win in the Super Bowl in 40 years. Mahomes has to date earned an average $4.6m each season with an impressive $181k each touchdown and $443k for every game.
Mahomes is on a speedy run to becoming the highest-paid sportsman in American sports. To put it into context, the deal Mahomes has signed will surpass some of the highest-paid players’ salaries by $100m by the time he is 36.
It is also unlikely that Kansas City could drop a player who can potentially be at the top of the league in his 30’s. As long as Mahomes remains the quarterback for the Chiefs, he is set to earn significant cash loads even though a large amount of his cash is in the form of bonuses rather than in a setup salary.
The most likely thing to happen is that there’s going to be a further restructuring of the contract, which will give Mahomes the guarantee of additional money as Kansas City gains better flexibility when it comes to the salary payment.
The one thing that is guaranteed is that if Mahomes keeps up his health, he is bound to get compensated very well for being the NFL’s biggest star. Hopefully, his career will turn out great, just like Drew Brees or Tony Brady. If so, he’s bound to earn a bunch of more profitable deals.
He’s the best player, most valuable player in the NFL (period)
He’s Aaron Rodgers with no weak area, but….he’s even better than Rodgers.
I didn’t think much about him early on, but that was because i really didn’t watch him play much.
If the stars align for him, i can see this guy making over a billion dollars in his career.
I can also see him being recognized as the best QB in NFL history, not just in the conversation, but undisputed.
Physically, he can do it all, mentally, he plays way beyond his years. This cat is something special.
OOPS, i’m sure others feel the same Ed….thanks for stepping up.
Anyone hear anything on how EQ’s camp is, how he is coming along?
