Packers Sign WR Ryan Grant as the Search For WR2 Continues

Jason Parker by Jason Parker

With the absence of Davante Adams due to injury the past two weeks, a lingering problem with the current Green Bay Packers roster reared its ugly head: there really is no solid WR2 for QB Aaron Rodgers to target. Players such as Geronimo Allison and Marques Valdez-Scantling were expected to step up and make up for the departure of Jordy Nelson and the overall youthfulness of the wide receiver position for the Packers.

As of Week 6, that just hasn’t happened.

Enter Ryan Grant

Not to be confused with the former Packers back Ryan Grant, he was a 5th round pick for the Washington Redskins in the 2014 NFL Draft, Grant has since bounced around a few different organizations including the Indianapolis Colts, Oakland Raiders, and now the Green Bay Packers. At 6′, he might not quite have the massive size of Jake Kumerow or Allen Lazard but he hopefully makes up for it with experience.

Grant previously missed out on a four-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens worth $29 million due to a failed physical. The Packers have assigned Grant jersey #11.

Too bad Kumerow blew his chance when he started against the Lions. 2 catches for 17 yards won’t cut it. He can’t say he didn’t have a chance.

So, where are we…this Sunday? With injury list in mind. Is Lizard our #1, and according to the headline, Grant is the hopeful #2?
    Hmmmm…

I’m not trying to be negative, but i’m also not gonna let that stop me from keeping things real. I have given Gute props for his additions on defense this off-season. But i have to say (again), that the receiver issue has been born from bad decisions, and neglect. IF….someone crowned me a NFL GM, And i had to make 20 personnel decisions, i think i could get a few of those right…..by accident. The law of averages.
    ***
Excuse me if i’m coming off as being a dick. But after giving Jimmy 13 million in cash his first season, what did he do that impressed you so much that you decided he deserves an additional 5 million roster bonus, before his second season? All i want to know is….does this make sense to ANYONE other than Gute? If anyone can explain to me (with logical reasoning) why Jimmy is worth that cash, i’d be highly impressed.
    ***
Yes, i feel a little better. But just a little.

Can’t criticize the WR2 mention unless you can name one yourself. aaron jones doesn’t count

Hindsight is 2020 but conceivably had Graham been cut prior to his bonus they could have used the savings to pick up a Beasley on the market.

4 years 29 million (I think roughly 16 or so guaranteed)

        What has that gotten buffalo?

Beasley is trending towards roughly 75 catches for around 1000 yards and no TDs…and that’s with Josh Allen as QB. Imagine his stats with 12.

There were plenty of avenues available in the off season to improve the receiver talent, the draft, free agency, trades, etc. My point is…why are we dealing with this in week 7? I understand your #1 got injured. But before he was injured, sometimes you have to have the vision of…what if he gets injured. Not too mention….relying 100% on receivers who haven’t proven themselves yet was a bad idea…which i brought up 5,6 months ago.

i’ll wait till seasons end, but i want to post about what kind of production 10 million dollars buys you in a first round pick. So far….it buys you 3 solo tackles, and a sack.

i’ll be honest with you, i’m at work, it’s painfully slow and i’m bored as F, but as long as i’m getting paid, i’ll live with it. I wasn’t trying to dig on you AT ALL (it was on Gute), that wasn’t my intent. I’d love to mention who our #2 is, but i can’t. That might be a question better posed to Gute. And frankly, i’d love to hear his answer.

Although it wasn’t a dig on you, i feel bad. Can i send you a PF4L polo shirt? It’s dark green with PF4L colored in Gold. I currently have sizes M, L, XL. Inventory is currently low.

Grant was a receiver for Sean McVay, ie, under the same system more or less that LaFleur runs. He probably knows the Packer system better than the current receivers as he played under it for 4 years in Washington and had some success. The last two places, Oakland and Indianapolis, he had to learn a new system, didn’t do much.

He’s never had a 100 yard game, but he’s come close. If the Packers get 4-5 catches out him a game out him, they would be doing well.

    • Avatar for PF4L PF4L says:

I didn’t even know there was another Ryan Grant. By the looks of things he didn’t have enough success. But we’ll see what happens i guess.

I remember this Ryan Grant from his time with the Redskins. I remember feeling sorry for Kirk Cousins cause this guy dropped everything that hit him in the hands.

  7. Avatar for KazooPackFan KazooPackFan says:

Um, is he better in the slot or out wide? Do we currently even have a slot receiver?

  8. Avatar for Ferris Ferris says:

OK I have the solution….I only need to make one GM decision. Sign Antonio Brown….. but have him change his name first, like Ron Artest did to Metta World Peace. We can take a poll for his new name. My entry is Irwin M Fletcher. Just in time for the Raiders game so he can score a TD and dance for Chucky.

I’m late to the party but I’ll give my $.02 since the game on Monday.
    .
How the hell is Jimmy Graham getting paid $10mil a year when he’s done next to nothing for the past year and a half? Robert Tonyan and Mercedes Lewis have done just as much, if not more, than Jimmy this year. You know who would have caught that TD pass that Graham dropped? I don’t even need to mention him because it’s blatantly obvious. At least he’s at home enjoying his family, injury free.
    .
For as much as Rodgers and Lafluer talk about getting Graham involved they sure have done a poor job of trying to doing so, aside from Graham dropping balls. Everyone talks about who the #2 WR is gonna be and they all forget that there’s a TE that’s making a fortune who was supposed to double as a wide out. Instead he’s not doing either. Who came to the rescue at the end of the game on Monday night? Not Mr.Moneybags. Nope, it was the no name 5th stringer Allen Lazard. That just baffles my mind.
    .
I just saw Packers.com has an article titled “Davante Adams proud of how Packers’ offense has stepped up in his absence.” Have we gotten to the point where Davante is the only reliable WR this offense has? Back in the day it didn’t matter who was out of the game because you knew the rest of the WR corp was stacked and could easily make up for it. Now? Not so much.
    .
Nothing against Geronimo and I hope he’s better from that concussion, but to me he looks like just another guy. Always has. MVS, I’m not sure what to expect. He definitely hasn’t matched the hype surrounding him yet. Let’s hope he gets there. Shepherd, two turnovers in one game. Not a good look, kid. Kumerow, another UDFA on the hype train? Lazard looked good on Monday. Keep it up.
    .
I just looked at the WR depth chart and before signing Grant, 4 of the 6 active receivers the Packers have are UDFA’s. Interesting.
    .
Not to complain too much. This is mostly just a brain dump about WR’s. The team is 5-1. The defense has been holding it’s own. That 5th round punter has been way more useful than Jerel Worthy or Kyri Thornton ever were, and Mason Crosby probably leads the special teams in tackles. Go Pack Go!

    • Avatar for PF4L PF4L says:

Good to see ya around cheese…Honestly, i think i’ve conveyed that i haven’t thought we had a reliable receiver after Adams, since Jordy was shown the door. I suppose someone could say since Cobb was shown the door. But to me that’s a bit of reach citing his TD production his last 2 years.

      • Avatar for Cheese Cheese says:

Yeah, it has probably been conveyed here but it’s sad that it has gotten to this point. I don’t need to elaborate anymore as we are all aware of the situation.
        .
I haven’t been around as much for a few reasons. Staying busy, the offseason/ preseason doesn’t offer anything newsworthy, I’m trying not to get worked up and spend energy on areas of this team that never change or don’t make any sense, and lastly, when I write a post my comment always has to get approval for some reason and depending on how busy the moderator is that can take from a few hours to over a day to show up. I’m not sure what the deal is. Not pointing fingers because the message board can have a mind of it’s own. I know I was put on a whitelist at one point. Maybe it has to do with that article I wrote. It was after that, that this started happening.
        .
Regardless of why everything I post has to get moderated it just gets discouraging when you’re trying to keep up with a conversation and all of your comments have to get approved by someone else who also has a life. By the time the comments show up I’m light years behind in the conversation, especially if it’s an extended discussion. Oh well, I’ll just lurk in the shadows until something really needs to be said lol.

Only you half wit idiots would take a 5-1 record and still find shit to complain about. Gute brought in Amos, the 2 Smiths, and drafted Savage, yet all I see on here is bitching about our receiving corpse. Hmmmm arent we 5-1? You are all hypocrites. You all loved GMO and Ty last year and blamed their inability to progress on Rodgers and Mcfatty. Now since you cant bitch about the Packers record, you bitch about the receivers. Seriously wtf is wrong with you guys? I think you all have Thompson/Mcfatty hangover. Hey those 2 bozos are gone, stop looking for new guys to turn into them. Regardless of a few deficiencies this team is fun to watch, has energy, and seems to have fun. OHHHH and they did all of that and went 5-1. What the fuck is wrong with you guys? How quickly you have forgotten the team we watched the last 4 years under MM?

Id much rather watch this team with a sub par receiving group and an over paid TE (by the way, i can name 25 teams easy who have at least on JG); then watch the shit show of the last 4 years.

I am thankful for this team and for the first time in 4 years I look FORWARD to Packer games.

PF4L im sorry man but you especially are bringing me down. Are you still recovering from your accident? I know what its like to be stuck at home all the time. You get bitchy, ornary. Man stop with the hate; Pack is 5-1, has a real good shot at 7-1, and MM and Thompson are gone. Figured youd be a bit happier.

Sorry but this thread really riled me up: have any of you considered that you claim how bad our WR choices have been yet we are 2-0 with one of the best WR’s in football on the sideline? Hmmmmmm.
