Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers were teammates from 2005 through 2007 before Favre moved on and Rodgers took over the reigns at quarterback for the Packers. The two discussed the Packers’ 4-1 start on SiriusXM NFL Radio, but not before a little banter about Favre’s 50th birthday(October 10th).
As the big day is coming up, Favre jokingly asked Rodgers if he will buy him a Porsche or something. Rodgers said, “that’s what you want?” Knowing the kind of guy Rodgers is, Favre said he would not be surprised to see a Porsche end up at his home, but kidding aside, Favre got to the meat of the conversation.
Asking Rodgers how the relationship is going between him and first year head coach Matt LaFleur, Rodgers admitted that it is a work in progress, and knew it would be such coming out of training camp. After all, Rodgers had never heard his voice in the headset and needed to get used to the rhythm and stuff. Now things have really been sharp and we’re starting to finish some of the calls coming out.
Rodgers acknowledges that it helps a lot when you can anticipate some of the calls and get into a flow confidence-wise, and it really helps to run the ball because it opens some other things in our plan. Not against Dallas, but the previous couple of weeks the Packers faced a lot of Cover 2 and Rodgers admits they didn’t run the ball nearly as well as they wanted to. Against Philadelphia they were very aggressive and threw the ball a bunch of times, moving the ball methodically down the field. Switching it up against Dallas, Rodgers mentioned when in the red zone we’re going to run it, when people think we’re a pass-heavy team. Ran the ball in four times against the Cowboys, three on a very similar scheme.
Rodgers reiterated something he remembers Favre saying years ago: I said after the game, all the stuff you’ve done statistically, you’ve done it all and you did it all, it comes a point where it’s about the wins and people are still going to focus on how many touchdowns you threw.
In the end, it’s ultimately about championships. Rodgers knows that they are now putting themselves into position in a very deep NFC, and a win on the road in Dallas goes a long way for the confidence in the team moving forward.
