The Green Bay Packers brought back a familiar face on Thursday. The team re-signed receiver DeAngelo Yancey to their practice squad.
In turn they released linebacker Greer Martini.
Yancey, a 2017 fifth-round pick, was on the practice squad in 2017 and with the team in training camp this year. He obviously has some grasp of the Packers’ offense.
Break glass in case of emergency.
That’s where the Packers might be this week. Their top three receivers didn’t practice on Thursday. Davante Adams sat with a calf injury. Randall Cobb has a hamstring injury that kept him out last week. Geronimo Allison is still out with a concussion.
That could leave the Packers with just Marquez Valdes-Scantling, J’Mon Moore and Equanimeous St. Brown.
Rookies.
One — St. Brown — hasn’t played a snap this year.
If none of the top three guys can go, it’s logical that the Packers would elevate Yancey from the practice squad as insurance. It would be a move very similar to when they elevated cornerback Tony Brown from the practice squad. That move happened after Kevin King went down and Davon House was sent to injured reserve.
The Packers needed precautionary depth at the position and they got it in Brown.
Now they just might have to get it in Yancey at the receiver position.
