Chalk this up to things we did not know. Cornerback Richard Sherman, long a hated foe of the Green Bay Packers when he was with the Seattle Seahawks, is Aaron Rodgers’ bro.
Surprising, because Sherman comes off as a prickly son of a bitch, to say the least. While Rodgers isn’t exactly the everyman, he at least seems a little more affable than Sherman.
Sherman, of course, was the lynchpin of the so-called Legion Of Boom defense in Seattle. Not going to lie. That was a good goddam defense. One that will be remembered.
That secondary of Sherman, Kam Chancellor, Earl Thomas and… whoever the hell they put out there as the second cornerback is undeniably one of the best ever.
It has been disassembled, however.
Sherman is in San Francisco now. Chancellor had to retire because of a neck injury. Thomas broke his leg early this season and will assuredly not be back in Seattle after a contract standoff. Brandon Browner and Byron Maxwell are out of football.
In stints elsewhere, we found out that those last two guys were made better by the collective whole.
Sherman, on the other hand, is still pretty damn good. Even at age 30. Even coming off a torn Achilles. He will face his old foe Rodgers on Monday night.
But it turns out they are not really foes. They are bros.
In fact, Sherman and Rodgers are text bros.
“Just checking if he has a great game or I see something on tape where he’s in his bag and doing something crazy like some of the Hail Mary’s that he’s thrown,” Sherman said. “I text him like, ‘Man, that’s crazy. I don’t know what you were thinking right there.’ He’s a good dude.”
Rodgers has not often thrown the ball in Sherman’s direction. In fact, that seemed to be an issue a couple years ago. Sherman confronted Rodgers after a game about not throwing the ball his way.
It didn’t seem like they were bros then. But then there was this sort of mutual admiration society.
Sherman has an odd relationship with the Packers, to say the least.
We see the guy in the Pro Bowl year after year and he’s messing around with guys who play for the Packers. We know the Packers explored a deal for Sherman when he was on the trading block this past offseason. And yet, here’s a guy who laid one of the cheapest cheap shots on Packers receiver Davante Adams just two seasons ago. Sherman initially defended himself and then… didn’t.
But ultimately, Sherman wanted to sign with a division rival of the Seachickens. He went to San Francisco and that was that, despite the Packers’ interest.
Much like Brett Favre, gotta stick it to your former team. The only way you can do that twice a year is by staying in the division. And that looked like a nice move. Looked nice right up until fellow porn star lover Jimmy Garappolo tore his ACL.
Then, everything for the 49ers and Sherman became what Garappolo’s ACL was.
Shit.
They’re 1-4 and they’re not going to beat the Packers on Monday night with C.J. Beathard.
Yeah, Sherman is still good. Rodgers probably won’t throw in his direction.
Why would you?
Who the hell is the 49ers other cornerback?
The Packers are going to need to move Davante Adams around. He has been effective from the slot lately and we know Sherman doesn’t play the slot. He only plays outside. Usually, only the right side of the field.
The Seachickens never moved him around to cover the other team’s best receiver. They just had the philosophy that: you don’t want to throw right. We are taking away this side of the field.
And that’s fine.
This is surely still an interesting matchup. However, one Aaron Rodgers should easily win.
Richard Sherman is going to be on one side of the field. His bro can throw anywhere. One guy can influence the game slightly. The other can dictate it.
R.I.P. and good riddance, Legion Of Boom.
