The competition that never really happened is pretty much over. Justin McCray is going to be the Green Bay Packers’ starting right guard.
To. The. Surprise. Of. No. One.
Coach Mike McCarthy hasn’t declared McCray the starter, but, you know… more or less.
“I hope so. He’s done a lot of good things. He’s definitely earned the opportunity,” McCarthy said. “You want to keep the competition open but, yeah, I think he’s done a heck of a job at this point.”
As if the competition was ever really open. McCray has been taking reps with the No. 1 offense since camp opened.
Quick, name me a backup guard on the Packers who has gotten reps with the first team.
Yup…
Who are the Packers’ backup guards? They are Walter Sobchak, Jeffrey Lebowski, Jackie Treehorn and Theodore Kerabatsos.
Actually, no. Those are characters from The Big Lebowski. But most of you would have no idea. Those guys MIGHT be backup guards for the Packers.
How’s the smut business, Jackie?
In reality, the backup guards for the Packers are Lucas Patrick, Kofi Amichia and Alex Light.
Seems like a legit competition…
But who cares?
McCray proved to be solid in 2017. He filled in at multiple positions, including right tackle. He is definitively not a right tackle, but managed to hold his own there and at every other position on the line.
So give the dude the job already, Fat Mike!
