The Green Bay Packers could use another receiver. Could former Dallas Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant be that guy?
Bryant has publicly said that he wouldn’t sign with the Packers because of “history.” He did so with a laugh though. Bryant’s first preference appeared to be the New York Giants, but the Giants have said they aren’t interested at the moment.
“At the moment” is probably key for every NFL team right now. With the NFL Draft this week, teams are understandably focused on that. Some teams are going to draft a receiver and then have no interest in Bryant.
However, there are a couple interesting developments with Bryant. And first, we should point out that we’re not terribly high on any of the receivers in the draft. Nor do we think any of them can replace Jordy Nelson in their rookie season. Aaron Rodgers doesn’t work like that.
Could Bryant?
Debatable, but he’s certainly a better option than a rookie.
Bryant reportedly turned down a multi-year deal from the Baltimore Ravens. They then went and signed restricted free agent Willie Snead. So they are obviously out of the running.
We also know Bryant turned that deal down because he wants a one-year deal. He wants to prove himself and enter free agency again next year. That tells us Bryant isn’t about money right now.
The Packers can make that one-year deal. Even if Bryant is only a rental, who cares?
Bryant may not be the guy who had 1,300 yards in 2014 anymore. He put up 838 yards in 2017. I’ll take that production from a No. 2 receiver.
A lot of people think Bryant is a problem in the locker room. I tend to believe the Packers — Aaron Rodgers, specifically — can handle any issues there. And if it’s just a one-year contract and Bryant doesn’t work out, then so long!
