The draft order has been established for those teams out of the playoffs for the 2018 NFL Draft. The Green Bay Packers will own the No. 14 pick.
It will be the highest selection the Packers have had since 2009. That year, they selected defensive lineman B.J. Raji at No. 9. That pick also follows the last season the Packers didn’t make the playoffs, which was 2008.
The 2008 Packers finished 6-10. You would know that season as Aaron Rodgers’ first as a full-time starter. You’d also know it as the one in which Brett Favre unretired and was subsequently traded to the New York Jets.
We have to wonder who will be making the Packers’ selections when the 2018 draft rolls around. General manager Ted Thompson is still under contract, but his record of recent draft failures and inability to plug holes is growing. At this point, you can’t think his job is 100 percent safe, considering the Packers were exposed as pretenders without Aaron Rodgers, this season.
Earth to Ted, PASS RUSHERS! You know those guys that make qbs uneasy in the pocket which in turn leads to sacks and interceptions. Yea we need a couple of those guys.
If Ted isn’t gone, then Murphy should be fired by the board immediately.
Ted, Mike, and Dom must all go immediately. This team is a complete embarrassment, and it’s ridiculous to ask Aaron to keep propping it up.
Good post…..Unfortunately, unless the walking dead retires, Ted has 2 more draft left. that’s if he doesn’t give himself an extension. Make no mistake about it, if Ted gives himself an extension here’s how that conversation goes…….
Ted: Mark, i need to see you in my office immediately.
Murphy: Yes sir Ted, i’ll be there in…
Murphy: What’s up Champ?
Ted: It’s time to talk about my extension.
Mark: Ok, can i get you a coffee and some danish first?
Ted: Nevermind that, just listen, draw up an extension by the end of the day.
Murphy: How long should i write it up for?
Ted: Through the 2024 draft.
Mark: What about money?
Ted: Gee Mark, what do you pay the top Executive in NFL history?
Murphy: I don’t have a clue Ted, but you’re making 8 million right now, and you’re clearly underpaid. Just tell me how much you want.
Ted: Make it 10 million a year, with a year end bonus of 2 million annually.
Murphy: Done. Do you want me to include 2017-18 in a year end bonus?
Ted: Don’t you think i’ve earned it?
Murphy: Yea, absolutely, that’s why i brought it up Sir. I’ll have a check for you by days end. BTW Ted, have you gotten a chance to go down my new sledding hill, it’s really wild.
Ted: Just go cut that check Mark, but 1st, go down to the cafeteria and get me a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and some graham crackers.
Mark: No problem, just give me 5 minutes.
Hilarious…….and right on the money.
Word drool should probably be included in the script somewhere.
Ted: It’s time to talk about my extension, Ted drooled
CLEAN SWEEP!! Anything short of a clean sweep of Ted, Mike, and Dom is an insult to all of Packernation.
Just firing Dom as the lone scapegoat is disgusting. Mike is horrible on multiple levels, and Ted’s failures are growing by the year.
CLEAN SWEEP!!
I just saw another story that there will be a coin flip between the Packers and the Redskins for the 13th pick.
I seen a similar story
Order of 7-9 teams is CIN, WA, then GB.
Packers will pick 14th in 1st round, then roll up to 13th in the second (Pick 45), and 12th in the 3rd (Pick 76).
Number of needs is overwhelming- start with pass rusher, then CB or TE, then OL or WR.
With the large number of picks I favor moving up for IMPACT players, of which we have very few. Rather than more bites of the apple, opt for a few juicy pears.
Remember when all we needed was a ilb and tight end?
What i don’t understand now…is why do people think we need an edge rusher? Isn’t that what Perry and Mathews are for? Isn’t that why they make the money they do? So Ted goes out and upgrades the pass rush for 3.5 million by signing Ahmad Brooks. That….is a very expensive 1.5 sacks.
How is this joke, and i mean, a fucking joke, allowed to continue?
So…what are we looking for in the 1st round? An edge rusher? a tight end? A right tackle? A corner for the 3rd straight draft? A safety? Should we re-up Burnett? will Josh Jones show some life in coverage and stop missing assignments? Will Dix play as shitty next season as he did this season? Will the Montgomery experiment be over? Will they get smart and replace Cobb with Ty in the slot, or will they try to turn Montgomery into a long snapper to replace Goode. Will Kevin King stop getting burned so easy at the line of scrimmage? Will Kevin King’s frail body survive playing in the NFL? I could go on…….
Each off season we have more questions, but never enough answers.
If this continues, Ted can stop drafting for need, and get back to drafting the BPA, only because every position will be a need.
Exactly. And I said last off season that letting Peppers walk was going to burn are asses big time. He still had juice at his age, especially down the stretch. There were no signs of him slowing down. And ill be damned if he didn’t kick ass for Carolina. We had Watt staring us right in the face in the draft as well. That’s two guys that would have been major upgrades that we just said fuck it we’ll go with Jayrone Elliot and a late round pick. How the hell can I see this but an NFL front office doesn’t? So upsetting.
Would Watt have started over Perry and Matthews?
You know what, shit he might have the way those guys played this year. But my point is the Pack knew damn well Matthews has been shit for years and Perry has injuries every season. They just pissed on the need. Ted pissed on the position and it showed this year. Doesn’t value LBs, his ass better start to if he’s back.
If TT remains as GM the only thing that TT will take away from the Packers being shit without Rodgers is draft a new QB with that first pick, and maybe even move up. As stupid as that sounds that would be TT’s thought process. Make that draft call no one could ever anticipate, except a man that stares at a TV with blank expression and mouth wide open. Forget about building up the team around Rodgers. Rodgers is getting old. Rodgers is injury prone. Rodgers is showing disrespect to MM, by questioning his play calls. Rodgers is telling me how I should conduct my business. Yes it is time for Rodgers replacement. We have two more years on his contract. That will give our QB whisperer MM ample time to get him ready. If not we can franchise tag Rodgers for a year or two. Trade Rodgers to an AFC team. Best yet no bonus money paid out. It can go to some flashy building structure that people can use to take their minds off the embarrassing loses and long winters with no games.
If Murphy does not get rid of TT then Murphy needs to go. Try to get rid of TT the Packer way, but do it even if it means firing, and make sure it happens before the draft.
I know Bob Harlan isn’t dead but Murphy sure could use a séance with him about right now.
Amen . . .
I was just joking around about this. But the Pack should trade Rodgers to LA or other west coast team for a 100 million and that teams next 4 first round picks. Why the fuck would Rodgers want to stay around this shit.
No one wants to admit that. They think Rodgers will be great until hes 45. Horse shit! The window is 3-5. There’s a reason why getting old is a bitch. Time waits for no man. Favre, Elway, Marino all looked like shit in their mid to late 30s trying to win SBs. Age and stress get us all.
The Packers should use the pick to draft a TE/OLB/CB/FS/DL hybrid….
If karma is real the top pick should be an epic fail after how Aaron and MM purposely tanked the final few games.
I thought it was either 13 or 14? Did they already flip the coin between us & the redskins???
Anyways. Never besmirch that 2008 … I liked that team lost 8 games by 4 points or less
Not many are saying it but a strong case could be made for taking a feature wide receiver if that player is available at pick 14. If say, Calvin Ridley could be available at pick 14, do you take him?
You’re going to be paying big money to Adams. Whatever happens in the Cobb/Nelson conversation (one or both gone, restructuring, etc.) it is safe to say you need to get the solid replacement in the WR corps and move on from both of them in these next two seasons at the most. If you get rid of both immediately do you make a serious run at Robinson in free agency? If so, you’ll have to pay $$$ to land a player like him. A potential difference maker (not a project) with a rookie contract could set things up well for the future in the WR ranks so that is why I’d hope there is a very strong consideration for a feature WR in the first round.
Now if that WR is not available in round 1, I think you look at edge rusher. Round 2, depends on the round 1 scenario but O line needs and keeping QB1upright and uninjured are high on the list as you move on from Bulaga.
I think round 3 could be where you find a good tight end prospect. One of three or four possibilities for TE to be available there could be Troy Fumagalli. Not trying to sound like a homer here but he’s a solid prospect worthy of consideration. Chances are a comp pick might be available in round 3 also. BPA here LB/OL/DB.
Did I read that 12 picks total are what GB will have? If so, can we hope that 7-8 make it? Can we really hope someone other than Ted is making the picks. That’s as much thought as I gave it so far.
That’s my sleeper first round need, the WR spot. I’m sick of that group too. Cobb can kiss my ass. He hasn’t done shit since that contract. Outside of Davante its a crapshoot.
