He’s here, he’s gone, he’s here again, he’s gone again. The San Francisco 49ers plucked receiver Max McCaffrey off the Green Bay Packers practice squad on Tuesday.
McCaffrey was in camp with the Packers this year. Despite a strong showing, he was released on final cuts. McCaffrey was then signed to the New Orleans Saints practice squad. The Jacksonville Jaguars signed him from New Orleans’ practice squad prior to week 2 and released him a prior to midseason. That’s when the Packers brought him back to their practice squad.
The life of an NFL nomad.
McCaffrey caught eight balls for 85 yards during the preseason for the Packers. He had one catch for four yards in five games with the Jaguars.
The 49ers’ leader in receptions this year is running back Carlos Hyde, with 53. Marquise Goodwin leads the team in yardage with 783. Maybe McCaffrey will actually get a shot this time around.
“Despite a strong showing, he was released on final cuts. ” Dude had 85 yards in four preseason games and has been jumping practice squads ever since, besides the one catch for four yards in Jacksonville. Astonishing.. Packers are gonna regret letting him slip away, twice.
i agree with CHEESE. He seemed like a clutch player that is focused, driven and a professional. The problem was they drafted Dupre and Yancy too and got rid of them all as they never needed receivers in the first place. An example of a lack of a grand plan and knee jerk moves, like the the attempts to replace Jared Cook, who they should have kept. Their loyalty to certain players is a double-edged sword, for example keeping a player like Hundley whose ceiling may not be as High as Taysom hill, who can tilt the field at moments, like Rodgers or Favre. The Saints were wise to recognize that with Hill… and in the draft with Kamara. The Niners with Jimmy Gar. and now McCaffrey.
All credit to the Jaguars..with bringing in Max and with their success this season. they seem to be on to something.
