Not much worked well for the Green Bay Packers’ defense against the Carolina Panthers. Case in point right here.
Packers linebacker Clay Matthews thinks he has this play figured out. He yells, “It’s that wheel route! It’s that wheel route!”
Panthers quarterback Cam Newton finds this funny, points at Matthews and says, “Oh, you’ve been watching film, huh? Let’s go. Watch this.”
Easy touchdown to Christian McCaffrey for the Panthers’ first score.

McCaffrey carried 12 times for 63 yards and caught seven balls for 73 yards and that touchdown on the day. It was one of four touchdowns thrown by Newton against the Packers.
Pretty pathetic.
I will give Clay credit for one thing. Unlike Nick Perry, he’s actually been able to stay on the field lately. Go out and be our entire pass rush is basically what the Packers have been saying to Matthews. To some degree, he’s had success, although Ahmad Brooks provided some help on Sunday.
A pretty bad play there, but the Packers’ overall defensive failures aren’t on Matthews.
