We were wondering why the Green Bay Packers didn’t activate Aaron Rodgers on Friday. It was the day he was eligible to the activated.
Must have been a tough roster decision. And thus, we wondered who would get cut.
The answer is quarterback Joe Callahan, who has become somewhat of an NFL nomad. Last year, he went from the Packers to the Saints to the Browns and back to the Packers.
Callahan was on the team’s practice squad this year and then was brought up to the active roster after Rodgers broke his collarbone. And now he’s out with Rodgers’ official activation… for now.
We suspect the Packers will sign Callahan back to the practice squad if he clears waivers.
That’s probably a good possibility, considering Callahan didn’t have the preseason he had last year. In fact, Callahan wasn’t much to talk about during this preseason. In 2016, he got most of the starts because Rodgers was standing around and Brett Hundley was injured. And he looked good.
The preseason of 2017, not so much. Callahan was outplayed by another undrafted free agent, Taysom Hill. Like the year before, the Saints claimed that guy. He’s now on the active roster and playing special teams for god’s sake!
So Callahan will dangle for a day. Then, hopefully, he will be brought back to the Packers’ practice squad. There were fans who wanted to see what Callahan would do if he replaced Brett Hundley. Frankly, I would not have been opposed to that. The guy is worthy of a roster spot, then why not give him a shot?
Hundley wasn’t exactly tearing it up, was he?
But we never got that. And maybe we and Joe Callahan never will.
