Aaron Rodgers’ Extension Reportedly Up Next

The Green Bay Packers have been busy signing their own to contract extensions. Both Davante Adams and Corey Linsley have gotten new deals this week. It now appears the Packers will turn their attention to getting quarterback Aaron Rodgers a new deal.

Even though Rodgers is signed through the 2019 season, he’s certainly taken note of what other quarterbacks around the league are being paid. He did so when the Chicago Bears gave their now backup quarterback Mike Glennon $15 million per season.

Rodgers’ average salary is $22 million per season. It was once the richest deal in the league, and rightfully so. However, that has since been surpassed by deals that Andrew Luck, Derek Carr and Matthew Stafford signed.

Rodgers has taken the position that these things will take care of themselves, i.e. he isn’t worried about it and doesn’t feel disrespected.

That said, the NFL salary cap will once again rise in 2018. The Packers will have some extra money and Rodgers will reportedly be the next in line for a new and larger deal.

Next contract extension up for the #Packers: QB Aaron Rodgers. Their top priority this offseason 💰💰💰

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) December 30, 2017

The #Packers can now focus their attention on an extension for QB Aaron Rodgers, make him the highest-paid player in the NFL Expect that to happen in the next couple of months.

— Tom Silverstein (@TomSilverstein) December 30, 2017

Once again, we would expect that new deal to make Rodgers the highest-paid player in the game.

And even though he’ll eat up a large chunk of the Packers’ salary cap, they will still have the financial flexibility to compete for free agents and re-sign their own players, if they so choose.

    Rodgers is next?

What about Mike’s and Ted’s extension?

Don’t laugh too loud, McCarthy has never gone into his last contract year without getting an extension. Not too mention the fact that Ted…always gets his extension before McCarthy.

Not saying it’s going to happen, but i’m not saying it won’t happen.

Following that with another thought. Even if Ted plans to leave, he might “gift” McCarthy an extension. If that happens, and Ted doesn’t get extended, at least we know that Ted is on his way out.

Rodgers accepting an extension is putting the last nail on his SB-expectation hopes’ coffin.
He will have accepted he won’t get another ring, so he might as well cash it in.

He could stay put with his already-rich deal, and with that keep the front office in check:
should they not make the appropriate moves, he can be gone for greener pastures
    after his contract expires.

I’ve accepted he won’t get another ring, he might as well cash out. If anyone on this team has earned it, it’s him.

I don’t fall under the belief that Rodgers should take less pay, while Ted over pays under performing players.

    Fuck that.

Cash out my man, or go to a team that has their shit together. New England might be in the QB market in 2019. That is when you maybe take a little less money and play for someone that knows how to build a team.

That’s it. He can leave for another team after he plays out his current (and not meager at all) contract. Him delaying his decision can keep the front office away from complacency, and acually doing their jobs to strengthen the team. If he decides this regime is unwilling or unable to do so, he can surely pick his next team (and salary) to get a true shot at a title.

        I agree MJ….but here’s the thing…..

What has happened in the last 6 seasons that would give anyone, any indication that the Packers wouldn’t be complacent, and would actually do their jobs of strengthening this team?

I say this watching this team digress in recent years with more needs than the year before.

Rodgers will be 35 next season, and recent history should be telling him what to expect.

Yes, Rodgers still has some time. But does he have enough time to wait for this team to undo the damage it’s done, retain enough support and talent around him to reach Championship level?

This teams high priced defensive talent…Mathews, Perry, Daniels, are not taking this team to a Super Bowl….that’s been painfully obvious.

We can hope each draft produces it’s 1st year like most fans were banking on this season, but that is, to put it kindly…..a fools dream, as i stated before the season.

This, among other reasons, is why i don’t believe another Super Bowl happens with Rodgers in Green Bay.

It would seem teams would be wise not to follow in the steps of the Lions, Raiders, and Colts. An extension perhaps, but do not make him the highest paid player in the League if you want other players around him to help win another Super Bowl Championship. Better late than never. . ..

    • Avatar for PF4L PF4L says:

And who is going to supply these players around Rodgers to help him win another Super Bowl Championship Edward?

Ted? Have you been watching this team?

So……insult Rodgers with an under market contract…. while Stafford and others make more than Rodgers. So then Ted can put that money to good use fielding a Championship caliber team?

Because why?….Giving Ted an extra 7 million a year from Rodgers, is the missing key to Ted building a Championship team? WOW

      That’s brilliant Edward.

It’s a shame you can’t be the Packers General Manager, then at least us fans could look forward to a top 3 pick in the draft every April.

First, it is not an insult to suggest Rodgers will take less money to help win Championships. That quality may be a necessary condition if things are to be rectified before the en of his career. Second, your straw-man argument that my comment somehow endorses Ted Thompson at this time or makes any comment about that matter is off base and hysterical, as per usual.

The subject of this article and my comment is whether the Packers should make Rodgers the highest paid player, and to what degree any extension will hamper the Packers ability fo field a competitive team.
It is not about the deficiency or adequacy of Ted Thompson as General Manager. I know it is hard for you, but try and stay on topic. That you cannot stay on topic further suggests you really should not join in the conversation at all.

Listen Gomer, you made a comment about surrounding players around him to win a Championship, so i asked you a question on who was going to do that.

I see time hasn’t changed anything, you’re still a pussy.

All I can say is Tom Brady

But, to your point PF4 – you need smart mgmt to make use of that extra cash – TT would squander it on poor draft pix and Martellus-type “super trades”.

Agree, give him the bucks – he’s currently not even in top 5 – Butterball Stafford, Derek Carr and Kirk “You like that” Cousins are making more than he is.

….next priority : Snow machine for The sledding hill ….
