Would the Green Bay Packers go outside of the organization to sign Aaron Rodgers’ replacement? At this point, it’s clear they have no plans to do so.
After Sunday’s game, Packers coach Mike McCarthy stated that Brett Hundley was his guy. The team also elevated Joe Callahan from the practice squad on Monday.
That hasn’t stopped outside speculation that the Packers might sign a veteran. Namely, Colin Kaepernick or Tony Romo.
Both guys were born in Wisconsin and Romo played his high school ball in Burlington.
Kaepernick has been unemployed since being released by the San Francisco 49ers this past offseason. Quite a few people believe his unemployment is related to his outspoken nature on social issues. Kaepernick was the first to kneel during the national anthem last year.
Would he even be a fit for the Packers? Not with in their current offense. McCarthy would have to make some adjustments to his scheme and play-calling to fit Kaepernick’s strengths. And we all know how flexible McCarthy is.
Romo retired from the Dallas Cowboys following the 2016 season and immediately took a job as CBS’s No. 1 color man. He’d be a much better fit for the Packers’ scheme, but would he unretire? When it was brought up on Sunday, Romo didn’t exactly come out and say no.
For the Packers to sign any other quarterback, Hundley would likely have to falter significantly.
He’s got millions of reasons not to do so. Hundley wants to be a starter and the Packers would like to trade him before his contract is up. If Hundley plays well, he’ll get his shot and the Packers will get some nice compensation in return.
It’s in everyone’s interest to make this current situation work. Hundley didn’t exactly inspire confidence on Sunday, throwing three interceptions. However, he was playing behind an offensive line with only two starters on it. It more closely resembled a sieve than a blocking unit.
A healthier line and some actual preparation time should help Hundley significantly.
And if the line remains as beat up as it is, you can bet your ass Romo isn’t coming out of retirement to get killed.
