The Green Bay Packers dumped one of their underperforming outside linebackers. Unfortunately, much to the chagrin of many, it wasn’t Kyler Fackrell. It was Jayrone Elliott.
Elliott was traded to the Dallas Cowboys for a conditional seventh-round pick.
What’s the condition? Who the hell knows and it doesn’t really matter.
Elliott was an undrafted free agent the Packers signed in 2014. What has he done in the three years since then?
He’s been a preseason hero. After early flashes in his first two seasons, he added weight to try to be a full-time player and he sucked. Elliott has a total of four sacks in three seasons with the Packers.
But the outside linebacker position is weak…
Well, yes it is. However, the Packers signed Chris Odom after he was released by the Atlanta Falcons.
Who the hell is Chris Odom?
He’s a rookie from Arkansas State. He had two sacks in the preseason and Big Ted obviously thinks he should have drafted the guy.
At the end of the day, what’s the difference?
Elliott wasn’t producing. He wasn’t a draft pick. The Packers might get something for him. And maybe Odom will produce.
Chris Odom: Good size for an LB, really good. Decent strength. But he has the mobility of a wax figure in a hot room, the speed of a 285 lb.er, and his 10 yard dash is that of a an under tackle. A fast under tackle but, still.
Traded Elliot for a conditional out-of-date bag of stale chips.
Ok Mel Kiper.
In other news Datone Jones is a free agent now
Yeah, your former #1 pick and occasional starter wasn’t good enough to make it into our top 9 defensive linemen.
But actually I think he is on IR — it was possibly injury related not making the final roster. That said, supposedly he and Will Sutton were in a dead heat… and Sutton did not make the final roster.
The Vikings have the best defensive line in the NFL. AND the best back-ups on the defensive line.
Quinton Dial is visiting with the packers apparently. I don’t remember the packers being this aggressive with signing people outside of the organization with TT around. I wonder if Wolf has his hands on the controls more now as rumored?
Good point Kato…Hard to know for sure, but it would make sense.
As far as Dial…I understand the niners are switching up their defense, but citing the fact they were last (really, really horrible) on defense last season, it would seem odd to get rid of talent. But who’ knows, i’m sure he didn’t have a strong supporting cast. Sometimes a new team attitude, change of scenery type of thing…..
It looks like Odom played with his hand in the dirt in college and during his stay with the Falcons. May take some time converting Odom to a standup OLB. Coverage could be a real adventure for Odom. Standing up could effect his get off in the pass rush.
Like Kato said about the team being aggressive, when you have nothing to lose, sometimes you just need to start swinging out of your shoes and hope you jack one out.
Just don’t overpay….again
Agreed. I get the feeling Odom will be a game day inactive most of the season. I think the packers simply wanted a different player with upside to develop. Elliott already spent four offseasons and three seasons with the team, and had yet to show he could be a dependable starter if need be. The Kyler Fackrell pick is killing them right now, as is Vince Beigel’s injury because it is likely forcing them to keep Matthews no longer justifiable salary on the roster. Fackrell is a bust, and this is a lost season for Beigel, and we will have no clue if he can play or not.
…AND Rodgers is another year older!
^^a queen fan looking for the light at the end of a very dark tunnel.
Another DL to OLB conversion project? For fucks sake will somebody end this nightmare….
Hey the Packers signed Michael Clark to the practice squad. That’s all I care about.
and Barclay to the IR this morning…great job stacking depth at OL along with OLB
