Rookie linebacker Vince Biegel hasn’t stepped foot on a field for the Green Bay Packers since May. It looks like the soonest he’ll step on the field is October.
Biegel, who had foot surgery in May, is reportedly going to start the season on the physically unable to perform list. That would mean he’ll miss at least the first six games of the regular season.
A fourth-round pick, Biegel was expected to help bolster the Packers’ pass rush. However, with today’s signing of Ahmad Brooks, that need isn’t so immediate.
That said, we’re not expecting much from Biegel at this point. Consider that Biegel hasn’t gone through training camp, played in any preseason games and won’t play in a regular season game or practice for at least six weeks.
As a rookie, that puts him at a huge disadvantage. A disadvantage in learning the Packers’ system, getting acclimated, earning playing time and contributing.
If you’re looking for Biegel to do anything, it will likely be late in the season, if at all. This could be a lost season for Biegel.
Providing the Packers’ top three outside linebackers — Clay Matthews, Nick Perry and Brooks — stay healthy, that shouldn’t be a problem. Of course, we know that’s unlikely for those first two guys.
What will be interesting is if the Packers stick with both Jayrone Elliott and Kyler Fackrell (or even former undrafted free agent Reggie Gilbert) as backups. In signing Brooks, they’ve signaled they’re not exactly happy with their depth at the outside linebacker position.
Could another move be coming?
Montravious Adams is in the same boat right? Maybe Ted should have taken Jaylon Smith last year. Basically lost rookie seasons due to injury before ever getting underway. That’s one way to draft and develop I suppose.
Good point. Only with Jaylon his injury was way more serious due to the nerve damage, and possibility he would never play football again.
Believe me, I wanted them to take a chance on him as a football fan but maybe it is better they didn’t
TT needs to focus on amputees and paraplegics in the 2018 draft….he can “outsmart” the other GMs by taking them in the 5th round
That and NEVER should passed on Dalvin Cook! WE NEED RB in worst way, that kids a game breaker, BUT NOOO Cadver Thompson took another DB who struggles to cover. Jesus Christ let a monkey throw darts in the war room, he’d make better picks. THOMPSON sucks ass!!!
Prediction: He’ll never play in a regular season game.
Corollary prediction: TJ Watt makes it to the Pro Bowl
This isn’t a fair comparison because Biegel was a 4th round pick and Watt was a 1st round pick. But a lot of Wisconsin folk are going to be asking why didn’t we take Watt.
There are going to be some questions about this for a long time. I wanted them to either take Watt or King. I had a slight preference for Watt, because I think a good pass rush will compensate for below average defensive backs. Then again, corners with King’s size, length, and speed don’t come along too often. That, combined with the immediate need of a starting quality corner where there are two top 15 starters at OLB starters probably helped fuel that decision.
When i see the Packers put a quality starting corner on the field, i’ll be the first to write about it.
That’s not a slight against King, he’s rookie, he’ll need time to get up to speed to see what he has to offer. He can start by not getting juked by the receiver in the 1st 3 or 4 yards. The same as Randall needs to stop back pedaling at the snap of the football giving the receiver a 5-9 yard cushion. Play up and cover the f’ing guy. Maybe, i don’t know……put your hands on a receiver?
A more fair comparison would be to observe King’s performance.
I would have preferred Watt or McKinley, though. A good pass rusher can bail a bad secondary. But for the secondary to bail a weak pass rush you need all 2/3 DBs sticking to their guys for 5sec. Unless you have the Legion of Boom from 2013, the odds are not good.
Same as I was thinking. A good pass rush can bail out a bad secondary, but with a bad pass rush the secondary needs to be ridiculous.
