Cornerback Davon House probably got himself some new Green Bay Packers gear when he re-signed with the team. Turns out, he didn’t need it.
House kept all of his Packers gear from the first time he was with the team. That’s odd, considering the Jacksonville Jaguars signed him to a big-money contract (before cutting him two years in).
As we saw with Eddie Lacy, who signed with the Seattle Seahawks and then had a garage sale to rid himself of all his Packers gear, most players ditch their former team’s gear when they move on.
Not House, who seems to wish he never had to leave.
“I mean people might look at me like I’m weird, but I kept all my Packers stuff after I left here,” House said. “Rooted for (the Packers) except when we played (them) in Jacksonville. … I felt like I was a still a Packer deep down inside.”
You could argue that the Packers should have re-signed House when he became a free agent in 2015. He was coming off a solid season and looked like a future starter.
However, it’s obvious what happened. Jacksonville came in with a four-year, $24.5 million deal. The Packers, as we’ve seen them do time and again, had a clearly-defined salary figure they wouldn’t surpass.
The Jaguars surpassed that number.
So House took a long road back to the place he wanted to play.
“I wasn’t going to go anywhere else, unless things were just ridiculously different than here,” House said. “This is where I needed to be, for me to ‘show the world what I can do type-thing.'”
Now, he’ll be looked to by the Packers to be a solid veteran outside cornerback.
That’s an area where the Packers were atrocious in 2016. House is now a likely starter after a wasted season in Jacksonville, where he played less than 300 snaps.
Of course, Kevin King and LaDarius Gunter will probably have something to say about that.
