This should come as no surprise if you’ve been following along. The Green Bay Packers are reportedly one of four teams most interested in Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon.
Mixon, as you surely know, is probably as well known for punching a woman back in 2014 as he is for playing football. There’s undeniably plenty of football talent, however.
Some people believe Mixon is the most talented back in the draft. He’s also settled all legal matters related to the incident and has personally apologized. While some teams won’t be looking past the punch, the Packers are clearly not one of them.
The Packers raved about Mixon during his pro day. There has been intense interest reported since.
Green Bay is obviously interested in adding another running back, with Ty Montgomery really the only proven commodity on the roster. They have bigger needs on the defensive side of the ball, however. Using a first-round pick on a running back — especially on a team with a coach who doesn’t value the position — seems foolish.
The unknown, of course, is where will Mixon get drafted. He was once considered a sure-fire first rounder. Now, there’s talk of him slipping into the second.
If he’s around when the Packers are on the clock in the second round, I expect them to be unable to pass.
