Cuts are coming for the Green Bay Packers. We’re going to see some guys let go we wouldn’t like to see let go.
Here’s my prediction for the Green Bay Packers’ 53-man roster. It’s not who I want, it’s who I believe the Packers will actually keep. If I were making the call, you know I’d cut that bag of dicks Davante Adams and keep Geronimo Allison. I just don’t see the Packers doing that.
There’s also the question of Trevor Davis. I’ve seen nothing from the guy to make me think he’ll contribute this year, but he’s a draft pick, so he’s likely to stick around. That is, if that shoulder injury he sustained Thursday night isn’t a long-term injury. If it is, Davis could land on injured reserve. That opens up a roster spot for someone else.
We don’t know anything about the injury yet, though. Until we do, Davis is on the roster, deserving or not.
Here it is.
Quarterback (3)
Aaron Rodgers, Brett Hundley, Joe Callahan
I couldn’t bring myself to release Callahan because I agree with Rob’s take that Callahan and Hundley are now linked. The Packers should trade Hundley before his contract runs out and Callahan looks like he could be Hundley’s replacement for the No. 2. I don’t think Callahan makes it through waivers to the practice squad if he’s released, so he had to stay on the roster.
Running Back (3)
Eddie Lacy, James Starks, Aaron Ripkowski
Obviously, when you go heavy at one position, you have to go light at another. One of those positions is running back. For me, Brandon Burks lost a spot here with that fumble Thursday night. He’s a practice squad guy and if Lacy or Starks were to get injured, he can easily be added to the active roster to accommodate.
Receiver (7)
Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, Jared Abbrederis, Jeff Janis, Davante Adams, Trevor Davis, Ty Montgomery
The top three guys here deserve a roster spot. The last four — totally debatable. Janis sticks simply for his special teams ability. The other guys — I really have no attachment to any of them. I just think the Packers will keep them all.
Tight End (3)
Richard Rodgers, Jared Cook, Justin Perillo
This is the easiest position to predict. We knew who was making the roster when the Packers stashed/released Kennard Backman and Mitchell Henry early in the week.
Offensive Line (9)
J.C. Tretter, Josh Sitton, T.J. Lang, Bryan Bulaga, David Bakhtiari, Jason Spriggs, Kyle Murphy, Don Barclay, Lane Taylor
If you’re wondering where Corey Linsley is, I’ve got him starting the season on the PUP list. Barclay will back up at center. When Linsley is able to return — he didn’t participate in training camp at all — the Packers will have a decision to make. Based on his play Thursday night, my bet is they ditch Taylor to add Linsley. That would make Barclay the primary backup at the interior spots.
Defensive Line (5)
Mike Daniels, Letroy Guion, Kenny Clark, Dean Lowry, Christian Ringo
Remember, Mike Pennel is suspended for the first four games. He won’t count against the roster. That suspension, I feel, makes it necessary to keep Ringo. I see no way the Packers can go into the season with just four defensive linemen. When Pennel returns, Ringo could be gone.
Outside Linebacker (5)
Clay Matthews, Julius Peppers, Nick Perry, Datone Jones, Kyler Fackrell
It’s simple. Jayrone Elliott was the last guy off my roster. In a world of the best 53, that allowed me to keep another inside linebacker. A guy who actually showed up this preseason.
Inside Linebacker (5)
Sam Barrington, Blake Martinez, Jake Ryan, Carl Bradford, Joe Thomas
I could see Thomas being released. Not because of play, but because he’s been injured the past two weeks. There’s another possibility — an injury designation for Thomas. Four inside linebackers is definitely a more realistic number, but best 53 — Thomas is among them. He was my last guy on.
Cornerback (5)
Sam Shields, Damarious Randall, Quinten Rollins, LaDarius Gunter, Josh Hawkins
Hawkins may have been one of the last guys to make this roster, but it seems like a pretty easy decision to me. All the guy did was produce during the preseason. Not only did he have two picks, but he blanketed most of the receivers he covered. There’s also the matter of Demetri Goodson, another suspended player. I have him being cut, although he wouldn’t count against the roster during the suspension. Robertson Daniel was the second-to-last guy off this roster. Hopefully, the Packers can get him back on the practice squad.
Safety (5)
Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Morgan Burnett, Micah Hyde, Chris Banjo, Kentrell Brice
The only real question mark I see here is Marwin Evans. He played great at times, but certainly didn’t have his best game in the preseason finale. To me, that puts him off the roster. Again, hopefully he comes back on the practice squad.
Specialists (3)
Mason Crosby, Jacob Schum, Rick Lovato
Practice Squad
Marwin Evans, Robertson Daniel, Brandon Burks, Beniquez Brown, Geronimo Allison
Obviously, that doesn’t fill out the practice squad. Each team gets 10 players. These are just the guys I feel are worthy to keep around.
Think your roster is pretty good. I hate when roster spots are taken by bad playing high draft picks. Biggest problem is D-line.
Good to see you have found your new whipping boy in Adams.
He’s going to make you look silly.
Not hard to do.
Looks like a good list. I would have Davis off. Davis I would be sure is hurt very bad ;-) and is off to IR. Davis could use some beefing up. Do wonder why Davis would not be cut because he is a 5th round pick. Didn’t Abby get cut last year as a 5th round pick, the year after he was on the IR?
Hard to say about Thomas and Elliot. Depends on extent of injuries. At least one of those 2 need to go.
I would include Daniels as a CB and put Price in place of Ringo. If there was one surprise I would put Kuder on the team. If nothing else Kuder is on the practice squad. I just think Ringo does not have the size for the backup nose and that is what the team needs till Pennel comes back. Who the hell knows if Clark is healthy enough to be that guy. That asshole Pennel could have made this a lot easier.
Howard I hope you are right about Kuder as I said in the other thread under Winners And Losers, but I have my doubts he is even being considered. Good to see I wasn’t the only one who noticed him the last couple games.
3 QBs and 7 WRs? Did you pick these names out of a hat? Good thing you don’t run a front office.
Callahan could be Hudley’s replacement? Hahahahahahaha. You just demonstrated any lack of any football IQ with that statement. We haven’t even seen Hudley play and Callahan played against scrubs. It’s good to know Total TMZ Packers is still being captained by morons.
