Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is under scrutiny, and criticism is being aimed at him unlike any other time in his 12 years with the team. Pick a passing stat, any stat, and it’s obvious why Rodgers finds himself in the crosshairs.
Looking at his totals for the first two games, his quarterback rating is 82.6, 22nd in the league. In 2015, his 92.7 rating ranked 15th. Rodgers passing yardage (412) is 27th. Last year he finished at 17th.
It gets worse, as Rodgers’ completion percentage (57.1) is 30th in the league. Last year it was 60.7 percent, which ranked 26th.
Finally, Rodgers’ yards per attempt (5.89) currently comes in at 31st. Last year it was 6.68, which still left him ranked at 30th in the league.
After 2015, if you thought Rodgers had nowhere to go but up this year, you were wrong.
The guy clearly is missing the short throws because he’s always looking for those long passes. If you watch the tapes, he has WRs running open on most of the plays, Rodgers just refuses to throw it to them.
“Wide receivers running open on most plays”…What games are you watching? Since when do the receivers get open (on most plays), is this something new?
“Rodgers just refuses to throw it to them.”….So Rodgers see’s open receivers (on most plays) but for some reason refuses to throw to them? That’s how you see it?
The dumbing down of Packer fans is now complete. Congratulations, now go shoot yourself.
Okay not most of the time but I’ve seen it several times last season. Hell he rather trew it to Adams in coverage somtimes to see it going nowhere.
Zwoeger..Are you also John Smith?
No I’m not. Are you not the one that advocates saying what one sees?
And here I thought the receivers couldn’t get separation. Or dropped balls that hit them in the hands. It would be fun to run the numbers and see how different the stats look if targets equal catches. That stat is misleading just like interceptions. When a guy hits a receiver square in the hands and the ball pops up and is intercepted, that shouldn’t count against the QB but it does. Same as dropped passes go against completion percentage.
Granted, he isn’t the Rodgers we have been accustomed to seeing. The last year of watching Rodgers regress for lack of a better term is hard to watch. Yes him overthrowing receivers or bad placement is on him. Rodgers is “off”, and his demeanor of late is shitty, but I’m not going to blame him solely for offensive failures. Everybody keeps bringing up the fact Rodgers isn’t a good come from behind QB. How many times has Rodgers brought the team back to tie or within striking distance after coming back from double digits in games the team was outplayed and outcoached? When he is sitting on the sideline like during their last 2 playoff losses because the defense collapsed, or his head coach was out coached once again, how is that on Rodgers?
Rodgers IS limited by whatever plays McCarthy calls- IF McCarthy can even get the play in on time after a timeout- and the resulting personnel on the field. Sure he has some leeway to make some changes, but he is still limited and doesn’t get to dictate personnel. Even if they get rid of Rodgers, are Hundley or Callahan going to suddenly make up for unimaginative play calling and piss poor game management? The same issues that plague this team, like not utilizing all the receivers, not running the ball, defensive collapses, unable to tackle, being predictable on offense, shitty special teams, etc. will all still be prevalent. Then whose fault will it be?
I’ll give you one better. Look no further than Favre. We all saw how “great” Favre did when Holmgren left and we were ushered into the Ray Rhodes/Mike Sherman/Brett Favre era of 1999-2007. That was some pretty brutal football in its own right, just like this era of McCarthy football is. I’d wager the Packers problems then were more self inflicted by shitty QB play. Rodgers hasn’t gone 4-12 in a season and has mainly been the reason the Packers made the postseason 7 consecutive seasons.
And don’t even start the shit argument that Rodgers is getting a pass living off his previous play. If that is the standard, then Favre did what he always did. He made his entire career off of pretty much being his own worst enemy. I seem to recall Favre forcing a ball to the only covered receiver in that 2007 NFC championship game against the Giants. In 2009 he tried to get cute once again and got picked off by Tracy Porter in another NFC championship game. Has Rodgers ever single handedly pissed away an NFC championship game?
13-11 in playoffs isn’t exactly stellar, and neither is the 7-6 of Rodgers. Again, Favre is mostly to blame for his losses, whereas Rodgers tends to be mostly a victim of McCarthy and company. Notice I said “mostly” and not “solely” with regard to both players, there are no absolutes. Still, I would much rather have Rodgers than watching Favre single handedly killing his own team like he did throughout his career. How soon people forget what all that trying to “make plays” and “having fun out there” ended up meaning to the Packers/Jets/Vikings fortunes over the course of 12 YEARS. Sticking a fork in Rodgers seems a bit premature after 14 GAMES. A new coach/offensive philosophy might do Rodgers well in Green Bay.
Empacador…You thought receivers didn’t get separation? Well John’s 1st post says the receivers are wide open most of the time, and Rodgers just “decides” not to throw it to them. which i’ll be honest, makes a lot of sense.
Fuck, i’m confused. I come in here to learn from all you fine people. Most of you have been saying that Rodgers is finished, that he’s done. So i guess i’m sticking with John, because he really makes the most sense. i’m gonna jump on that bandwagon since i don’t have the capacity to think for myself. I’ll just follow the sheepherder.
I’m sticking around here, because i just love learning about football. I’m a sponge to all the knowledge you great people feed me. the people i learn the most from are usually under 30, became a fan in 2010, or maybe even the 90’s and really have the knowledge to teach simple minds like me.
THANK YOU.
