No he will not. You will have to pry play-calling duties from Mike McCarthy’s cold, dead hands.
That was the message when he spoke to USA Today this week. He says he doesn’t regret handing play-calling duties to assistant Tom Clements last year, but won’t be doing that again.
McCarthy made a big to do about giving Clements those duties in the 2015 offseason. The results weren’t good and McCarthy took play-calling back in December.
He doesn’t regret the way that went down either.
“That’s responsibility and leadership is what that was,” McCarthy said. “It wasn’t popular. It’s something that you didn’t want to do. But I had to do what I thought was best for the football team. That’s what I think about at night. That’s what I think about when I get up in the morning. That’s my every-day, all-day professional thought.”
It sounds like the playbook has changed with McCarthy back at the helm, as well.
“I’m talking about fundamentals and back to basics of how you build a playbook,” McCarthy said. “What’s in the playbook? Why is it in there? Why did you take this out and why did you add this? Conceptually, why did we run this in the past? How did it evolve into different variations? Because you make projections on how you want your team to grow.
“We went back and went through the changes that we made going into last year. Why did we change them? They didn’t work out the way we wanted to, whether it was a play concept or procedure of who was up in the box, who was down. You’ve got to look at all of it. It’ll be a little different this year than it’s been.”
Fundamentals and basics are something McCarthy has been talking about all offseason. Back in June he asserted that the Packers need to develop players and not plays.
We would disagree — the Packers should be developing both and it sounds like they are. Mike just wasn’t too smooth with his soundbite there.
The question none of us can wait to be answered is a simple one. Will the offense go back to where it was pre-2015?
Might it even evolve into something better?
We’ll soon see.
This is another thing that bugs me when McCarthy speaks. “But I had to do what I thought was best for the football team.” More often than not he references “football team”. Right up there with his “pad level” speak. Like nobody is aware you are the coach of the Packers, Mike. Let’s make sure you identify the correct team/club. I don’t think anyone is going to confuse him as being the coach of the Green Bay Packers baseball or basketball teams.
Oh, and he will relinquish play calling duties again. Right around the time Aaron Rodgers calls it a career.
I don’t know, or care if he should give up playing calling.
But this i do know…. After the last 5 seasons of playoff futility, if the Packers don’t at least get to the Super Bowl this season. I’ll purchase Capers, TT, and MM a one way plane trip out of Green Bay.
That’s enough fucking around.
