We figured tight end Andrew Quarless’ NFL career was over. We figured wrong.
God’s Gifts was signed by the Detroit Lions on Monday.
The Lions are obviously desperate. They just picked up a guy who will be suspended the first two games of the season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. That suspension came from an incident in July of 2015, which saw Quarless fire a gun in public and then try to hide behind a plant.
The Lions addressed that when they announced the signing.
“We are aware of the upcoming NFL suspension of Andrew Quarless,” Lions GM Bob Quinn said. “We have thoroughly researched the incident that caused the suspension and have talked at length with Andrew about this. Andrew has been forthright and honest about the situation and he has gone through the process within the legal system. As an organization we are comfortable with adding Andrew to the roster and look forward to seeing him compete for the rest of the preseason.”
The Lions have also picked up a guy who never really produced anything.
Gifts caught just four passes for 31 yards in 2015. His season high for receptions is 32 (2013) and yardage is 323 (2014).
So why even make this move?
The Lions tops tight ends are injured. Eric Ebron has an ankle injury and Brandon Pettigrew is on the physically unable to perform list.
