Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt feels like he has two starting-caliber quarterbacks on his hands. Van Pelt offered up that assessment when asked about the progression of backup Brett Hundley.
Van Pelt suggested he strongly feels Hundley will be a solid starter in the NFL.
That may or may not be with the Packers. Aaron Rodgers is under contract with the team through 2019.
Hundley is entering his second season, so he’ll be a free agent after the 2018 season.
At that point, he’ll have a decision to make and so will the Packers. Does Hundley want to go somewhere else for a chance to start immediately or does he want to stay in Green Bay and succeed Rodgers?
If the Packers want to keep Hundley, they’ll probably have to pay him like a starter.
For the time being, the Packers appear to have themselves in a good position if Rodgers were to go down.
Down the road, they could have their next starter.
Very unlikely that he is Rodgers’ heir. After two more seasons (besides 2016) he would become a FA. Rodgers will still be young enough to play QB. In that case, the kid will be signed by someone else to a well paying contract. That, if we do not trade him for some picks to a QB needy team (there’s always a bunch of those) before he reaches FA.
Alex Van Pelt, one year ago, on Davante Adams:
“Davante’s another guy that the arrow is pointing up,” Van Pelt said. “The ability to make the plays he made for us late in the season I think gave him confidence coming in that he can be a go-to guy in our system.”
