The Book on Packers’ First-Round Pick Kenny Clark

Kenny Clark

Wow.

The board had Myles Jack, Reggie Ragland, A’Shawn Robinson and Robert Nkemdiche. All potential home runs.

Instead, the Packers once again outsmarted everyone by taking UCLA nose tackle Kenny Clark.

First, Big Ted LOVES guys from UCLA. Datone Jones, Brett Hundley, Jonathan Franklin… gotta have ’em!

Second, a nose tackle… were the Packers reading all the bullshit clips about how they needed to replace B.J. Raji? They already have two nose tackles in Letroy Guion and Mike Pennel.

So let’s say Mike Pennel is such a fuckup that he’s being totally written off. And let’s say Guion is better as a defensive end, which he isn’t.

Then this was a need pick?

No.

Let’s not even entertain that thought at this point.

Let’s just assume this guy was the top guy by far on the Packers’ board.

Because that’s the only logical explanation. Kenny Clark was the top guy on the Packers’ board by far.

They’ve seen something in him that most other teams in the league haven’t.

And while we’d tell you that’s totally fucking absurd, Big Ted did just that when he outsmarted all of us and drafted Damarious Randall in the first round last year.

It’s possible.

It’s also possible this is another Datone Jones or Nick Perry pick. Clark will be sold as a difference-maker and then he’ll barely get on the field.

Or, it’s possible that Big Ted was blown away by losing Raji. That, despite all evidence to the contrary, Ted thought Raji was actually a good player.

“And boy, I just gotta replace that all-star, B.J. Raji!”

So, Kenny Fuckin’ Clark…

Not Reggie Ragland, not Myles Jack, not A’Shawn Robinson…

Kenny Fuckin’ Clark. Here it is.

2015: 75 tackles, 11 for loss, six sacks

Listen, those are GREAT numbers for an interior defensive lineman. Also, this dude is 6-3, 314. He’s a run stopper, though. He’s going to take up blockers.

That will be his job with the Packers.

So, we just drafted another B.J. Raji.

Let’s hope this one is better than the useless sack of shit the last one was.

Highlights…

    1) Eat a fucking Snickers, Montavius, don’t go full SMG on us.

    2) Kenny Clark, eh, Ted? Myles Jack with injury concerns and Noah Spence and Nkemdiche with behavioral issues I can get but passing on Robinson, Reed, , even Butler and Billings I don’t get. Either way, going to be a lot of good talent available tomorrow as well, can’t believe so many receivers went that early.

    • Avatar for Phatgzus Phatgzus says:

Didn’t know he was a wrestler (yeah, another TT pick who was athletic enough to play multiple sports, what a travishammockery), that’s definitely a big plus.

  2. Avatar for Phatgzus Phatgzus says:

BTW, we still don’t know what we have in Pennel and/or Boyd, and a t least we didn’t trade away a bunch of fucking picks to move up and select a guard.

    • Avatar for Howard Howard says:

If the guard you mention is Garnett? That guard handled Clark Man up with ease this year. Clark really had very little impact against teams like Stanford or Nebraska. He can get push against centers when singled up,and he could move the line of scrimmage better than the other d lineman on that team. He will struggle holding ground against double teams. At least he did against the mentioned teams.

      • Avatar for Phatgzus Phatgzus says:

That’s two games, and I’ll say this again, maybe he won’t be a nose tackle, or at least exclusively. That guard likely would’ve been available to the Niners at their pick (5th?) in the second round, THAT was my main point, waste of draft picks trading up, Cody Whitehair was still on the board no less (THAT is another point-differences in analyst’s and GM’s draft boards.

Clark is also young and should have good leverage as a result of his background. Remember, you’re not necessarily drafting a player based on what he IS but what you believe he will BECOME with maturation and coaching.

        • Avatar for Howard Howard says:

Two games against top competition? I believe he will be playing against top competition every week in the NFL. I know what you are saying about trading up. I’m just saying that guard had his way with Clark. I just hope we do not have to wait 3 to 4 years for Clark to mature.

One good thing about Clark is his wrestling background will help. Wrestlers have that instinct and feel for taking advantage of opponents body position, and balance. In addition they are hard workers who do not give up. Clark did not appear to give up when the d was getting dominated by Stanford and Nebraska. Clark and Daniels will click.

          • Avatar for Phatgzus Phatgzus says:

It IS top competition, my point was simply everyone has bad games, no matter the level of competition and calibre of player. Hopefully that’s all it was, I don’t know, I haven’t watched nearly as much tape on him as a single one of those NFL scouts. One thing I do believe is the Packers started the run on the big guys, a group of big guys who were mostly projected to have similar ceilings and/or floors (barring perhaps Rankins, but apparently neither Reed nor Robinson). Teams that draft a big guy from the first crop usually end up with a pretty good player (of course a possible example for the counterpoint was drafted by TT), so I’m not all too worried about this pick.

          • Avatar for Howard Howard says:

Clark may be a fine pick. We can find flaws in any player. Not sure I like TTs record with drafting 6′-3″, 33″ or less arm length, 300 pound +- d linemen. Like Neal, Worthy, or Thornton. I would like a little more length if you were going to move Clark to end. Clark if a NT will be moved by guards or double teams in the run game until he can beef up.

I do like that Clark was not the 5th or 6th D lineman off the board as would usually occur. Hopefully TT saw something more in Clark than this scout.

” What bothers me about Clark is that he was so much better against weaker competition than he was against better talent. I like him, but not like everyone is hyping him up.” – AFC Pac-12 scout.

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbD179r7OKo

Pretty good video, highly informative. Clark definitely was NOT getting dominated in this game when it was still close-he absolutely embarrassed the center in this game, could not block him except in the run game or on a double. This guy doesn’t think he has the polish to be a first round pick, but loves his ability and thinks the main issue with Clark is his technique, which is coachable, especially if Clark is as smart as everyone says. VERY high ceiling.

          • Avatar for Howard Howard says:

Did you not read comment 4. You just said the same thing I did. He can get push against a center singled up, and has problems holding his ground against double teams. Or I will add against quality guards such as Garnett.

          • Avatar for Phatgzus Phatgzus says:

You stated he had little impact and was handled by Garnett vs. Stanford, this video clearly contradicts that.

He held up quite well against double teams, he beat Garnett a number of times in the first half when UCLA still had hope of winning, and he absolutely destroyed the center the entire game except for a few run plays where his lack of technique cost him.

No need to get so defensive.

          • Avatar for Howard Howard says:

Wasn’t being defensive. As I said earlier Clark will get push man up on a center. He will struggle against quality guards to start and I believe there are several of those in the NFL. He will struggle against double teams to start. He does have the best push of any of his teammates as he has a good initial burst. He does show up better against lesser teams. I believe the video shows such.

He is young and he should get stronger, I just hope it doesn’t take 3 years. A nose tackle if Clark is used there would be good to have early this season to help against the run. I do not believe he has the ideal length to be a DE, but he could be used at that position in the rotation. It will be good for him to be with Daniels. Clark and Daniels will be a good combination. I think there were a couple of D lineman that would have been better, however Clark was not drafted overly high. The truth is TT has made mistakes on defensive lineman before, although I like this kid better than some of the other picks. So you and TT are correct as always. If that makes you feel better. So now why don’t you get in the last word as usual, as I do not have any further time to discuss this.

          • Avatar for Howard Howard says:

One more thing you wrote that I disagree with. You appear to indicate Clark didn’t give his all when the game was out of reach. I saw just the opposite, Clark never gave up in any games even though some of his teammates may have. Isn’t that interesting how different people or scouts can have different opinions of the same tape ,circumstance or player. Time will tell. I think the kid will do well. I hope he does great.

          • Avatar for Phatgzus Phatgzus says:

Nice condescension, good stuff, clearly time is not a major constraint as it takes all of 3 minutes to post a comment and you’ve posted plenty.

Stanford was NOT “lesser” competition and Clark had a good game or at least first half. Further more I never said he gave up, the analyst said he didn’t give 110% when the game became a blowout which is pretty easy to believe, human nature and whatnot.

Yeah, he’s raw, it’s going to take him some time to reach his potential (assuming he ever does), but he has so much natural ability that he is supposed to be able to play immediately.

Not the DT I wanted but the Packers needed big guys on defense: Daniels, Guion, Boyd, Pennel, Jones, Perry, and Peppers and a few practice squad guys, that is our D-line, and many of them are nearing the ends of their contracts.

Pac 12 is a weak football conference so his stats were against weak competition. Take those Alabama players, they are winners. Another WHO!!? reaction in the first round. But last year I said the same thing so maybe Ted is right and everyone else is wrong. Ted forgot to call me again this year to get my opinion.

Wasn’t everyone getting a big chubby over Davante Adams his 1st year? How did that work out in his 2nd season? Lets not forget about Jarrett Boykin. And where is he now. somebody’s practice squad?

        As many or more mistakes?

I can only remember a handful of major mistakes: Maclin vs. KC, Missed PI call on deep ball @ CAR, PI on Amari Cooper, long completion to Amari Cooper @ OAK, botched zone coverage that resulted in a season-changing catch by Larry Fitzgerald @ AZ.

Meanwhile I can remember significantly more positive moments:

        vs. SEA – GCG
vs. KC – Stuck a receiver on a 3rd-and-short? (possibly second) @ SF – Good coverage game
        vs. STL – GCG
@ SD – Actually a pretty decent coverage game; game-winning PD
@ DEN – GCG; INT of Peyton Manning
@ CAR – Again, actually a pretty decent coverage game; INT of Cam Newton to give Packers a chance at a win along with yet another decent coverage game
@ OAK – Pick six; GCH-shut down Cooper in the second half
GCGs vs CHI, DET, and MIN twice each
@AZ – Was OK, AZ only threw for one half, the Packers offensive line did the rest of the work for them.

        @ WAS – GCG
        @ AZ – GCG; INT

    D. Randall SUCKS!!!! He was in the right place at the right time to look like he made a couple of plays. The guy has no brain. Listen to him talk.

And the funniest part about reading these comments is that most people commenting on who they should have drafted have never even heard of the players they are advocating for until last night. You saw a 20 second clip showing the 4 or 5 best plays that player made, saw that an “expert” had projected him going sooner, and heard Steve Marriucci or Grunden say that they guy “is NFL ready” or “will create problems for opposing teams”. All of a sudden you’re genius who is smarter than 31 nfl GMs and hundreds of scouts.

  24. Avatar for Kato Kato says:

Chill out. I admit I kind of did a double take when they said Kenny Clark as well. But I am going to reserve judgement. I don’t know that he will be a star, but he could be a very good player. There are two things I like about the pick: he is super young (20) and has plenty of time to grow into his body, and the fact he was a wrestler. Wrestlers have great instincts and can use the slightest advantages of body position to win one on one battles. His ability to take on double teams is a bit concerning, but let him get stronger, and get NFL level coaching. Some of that is technique related. Mike Daniels will be a good influence on the kid.

Btw, Myles Jack’s knee must be real scary. Yikes. Actions speak louder than words that the fact 31 of 32 teams passed on him last night (besides patriots). I trust the medical professionals of NFL teams more than random posters on TP, no offense.

    Viking fan here.
As your neighbors to the West and the 2015 division champs I thought you might like to have our thoughts on Kenny Clark. OK, just mine really.
I had Clark ranked as a late 1st rounder which is exactly where he went.
He is definitely a better pick than Ragland, Reed, or Robinson, the Triple R’s from Alabama.
Jack, we cannot pretend to be medical experts. A situation like that can make you look brilliant or idiotic for making the pick. TT would never risk himself and his ego like that. As long as he has Rodgers at QB he can coast along making one mediocre draft after another especially because his poor drafting his masked by poor free agency activity causing lots of players who would not start normally being giving starting status.
TT could certainly have made better picks at #27 though. Vernon Butler is a Linval Joseph clone and should have a better career than Clark. I’ll say it now: Clark will never get any serious consideration for a pro bowl. And I’m talking best case in every way and still then never. Other DTs still available who will be better than Clark include Andrew Billings, Jonathan Bullard (he would play DE in the 3-4), and Javon Hargraves. Outside of DT there were other opportunities that were better than Clark: OT Jason Spriggs, WR Michael Thomas, OT Le’Raven Clark among them.
One day you guys will realize TT is poor. when you do, call me and I will GM for you. If you’d hired me yesterday morning you would have a shiny shiny Vernon Butler instead of dull dull Kenny Clark.

LMFAO, mediocre draft, fucking hilarious. You have no idea just how stoked I was that Minisoda took a possession receiver with their first pick, complete fucking waste as long as Teddy Bridgewater is your QB, and you know it, talk about players who shouldn’t be starting.

“Fatguts” Phatgzus, it must have taken you a couple hours to construct that entire paragraph.
Treadwell is going to destroy your little corners. Opening game, 7 catches, 91 yards, 2 TDs I predict.
Teddy is not only a great young quarterback he is also a class act. Unlike Rodgers with his collection of serial killer memorabilia including an Ed Gein human skin lampshade. How messed up is that!?!
That said, Spriggs was a steal in round 2 as he was worth a 20th overall pick at the least. Well, even a blind squirrel like TT finds an acorn once in a while.

Aaron Rodgers, Mike Daniels, Josh Sitton, TJ Lang, Corey Linsley, David Bakhtiari, enough nuts for a bag of fucking trailmix right there.

Nice fucking prediction, Teddy Bridge-About-to-Crumble-into-Troubled-Waters will be lucky to have 91 yards passing. And I think our CBs who handled Megatron just fine year in and yea out will be ok against your VAUNTED passing attack.

Fatguts you just don’t get it. I’m not just talking about your social skills there, but also your football and acorn vs. nut acumen. Sorry, I should not have used a word like “acumen” with you, after all I do want you to comprehend what i write. Damn, “comprehend”, there I go again. Fatguts, “comprehend” means “to understand”.
OK, Spriggs is a 20th overall type talent gotten in the second round. Getting a second rounder in the second round would be like getting a standard but for a squirrel. But squirrels LOVE acorns so getting Spriggs in round 2 was like getting an acorn, not a run of the mill nut. Do you get it now or do I need to start drawing stick figure pictures to give you a fair chance?
It is surprising your juxtaposition (oops, sorry) in the final sentence of your first paragraph. You contrast something you have first hand working knowledge of — crackpipes — with something you’ve perhaps seen but have very limited experience with — books.
Not that I expect math excellence from a Packers fan but 5 nuts would not, in fact, fill “a bag of fucking trailmix”. Try it at home. Get a bag. Put 5 nuts in it. Is it full?
All GMs get some picks right. It is the overall percentage and quality that counts. You name 5 players. That is like showing 5 completions by Blaine Gabbert and saying he is a hall of fame QB.
This year TT got a late 1st rounder in the late first round, a 20th overall in the second, and then a whole lot of average to practice squad trash the rest of the draft. Lowry would have been a reach in round 7. Martinez is as good as a lot of LB still available after being undrafted. That is two 4th rounders just thrown down the drain. So was the 5th rounder with Trevor Davis. Kyle Murphy in the 6th round was good value.
If I had run your draft you would have the following:
    1. DT Vernon Butler
    2. OT Jason Spriggs
    3. LB Joshua Perry
    4. LB Kentrell Brothers
    4. WR Charone Peake
    5. LB Tyrone Holmes
    6. SS Jayron Kearse
Hey, I know hardly anything but I will bet you “my” draft class for the Packers will have a better success rate than TT’s.
As per the Treadwell prediction, it may not come true if AP runs for 180+ yards and a couple TDs. If we dominate Capers’ D as usual in the running game not much passing will be needed.
Defeating the Packers! What a wonderful way to christen the new Dome!

How many 100 yard games vs the Packers did AP have last year? ZERO? That’s right; and the Vikings scored all of 33 point in TWO games vs the Packers last season, whereas we managed to drop 30 on you at home? fucking good stuff.

FYI not a juxtaposition you dumb fuck (there was no comparison) just some helpful words of advice, you may want to pick up a dictionary while you’re at the bookstore diddling yourself to a picture book of farm animals, ya deviant fuck.

Thanks for the attempt at reading comprehension, but please stop your attempt at sounding intelligent is fucking beyond embarrassing-you’re just going to end up hurting your poor shriveled pre-frontal cortex and turn everyone in your general vicinity (fyi, that means proximity or close area) into Terry Schiavo clones by osmosis, ya brain dead fuck (there, I made that reference easy for you, and no THIS is not a juxtaposition either).

Clay Matthews, Jordy Nelson, Greg Jennings, Nick Collins, Eddie Lacy, Randall Cobb-gonna need another sack for all these nuts, but don’t worry I got ya covered, it’s smothered in smegma but as a Vikings fan I’m sure you’ll love it, as that’s the number three staple in your diet, right behind Hormel dog food and Hamms beer-flavored vagrant piss.

BTW, once you buy that dictionary and figure out how to use it (hint: set it on a table, grab the cover, pull it upward and begin to read [left to right] and try, try, try with all your wee little acorn-brain’s might to comprehend), look up the word hyperbole, you poor fucking sole survivor of an alcohol-induced sperm genocide.

Wow, a smaller, slower version of Datone Jones with shorter arms. Not expecting much from this guy.
