We called this one. Free agent outside linebacker Andy Mulumba signed a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs, Friday evening.
Mulumba chose the Chiefs after visiting with the New England Patriots. The Green Bay Packers, who Mulumba played his first three seasons with, made no attempt to re-sign him.
In fact, the Packers essentially said they were finished with Mulumba when they chose not to tender him a restricted free agent contract after the season. In doing so, they made Mulumba an unrestricted free agent.
We figured the Chiefs as a logical landing spot because of general manager John Dorsey, who came up under Packers general manager Ted Thompson. Dorsey signed outside linebacker Frank Zombo when the Packers gave up on him after the 2012 season.
Zombo has been a decent rotational player for the Chiefs in three seasons.
Mulumba’s best season with the Packers came in 2013, when he recorded 30 tackles and a sack, while starting three games. Mulumba tore his ACL in 2014 and returned in 2015, but only managed to play 50-odd snaps all season.
