The big news out of Green Bay on Wednesday was that the Packers promoted offensive quality control coach Luke Getsy to receivers coach.
As we noted, Getsy isn’t long on experience, having served as a receiver coach for just one season at the collegiate level. However, he apparently had some allies on the team.
“We had a plan last year as far as how we delegated responsibility, and we definitely did not hit the target,” Packers coach McCarthy said. “We had a drop off in offense. We’ve had time to evaluate it.
“Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, all expressed a desire for Luke to get the job.”
That vote of confidence certainly bolsters Getsy’s status in our eyes.
Interestingly, McCarthy also addressed the shortcomings of last season’s coaching staff. McCarthy chose to give quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt a dual role as receivers coach.
That didn’t really work out for anyone, as the Packers finished 25th overall in passing offense.
Still, McCarthy isn’t always quick to admit shortcomings. We’re glad this one has been addressed.
