Guys have been talking about fundamentals a lot this season — Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy chief among them. These talks usually come after the Green Bay Packers have one of their typical awful offensive efforts. They also usually come after receiver Davante Adams has had another one of his typical terrible games.
Although we’ve long suspected Adams was one of the culprits — one of the guys who wasn’t preparing properly — no one has really fingered him directly. Well, until now.
“It always goes back to fundamentals, doing it the right way every single time,” Packers offensive coordinator Edgar Bennett said. “And it always goes back to how we practice. The opportunities that he gets at practice, we practice how we play. That’s the bottom line. We’ve got to continue to do it on a daily basis on the practice field and it will show up on Sundays.”
Adams hasn’t turned into the player the Green Bay Packers expected him to this season. After a promising rookie year that saw him put up 38 catches for 446 yards and three touchdowns, Adams has actually regressed.
He has 43 catches for just 387 yards (9.0 average) and one touchdown this season.
What’s more, he doesn’t look like he even belongs on the field. Adams is a terrible route runner, cannot beat one-on-one match-ups and has a team-high nine drops this season.
Rarely does a guy get worse from his first season to his second, but that’s exactly what we’ve seen here. Those around Adams are clearly suggesting it’s because he isn’t a professional. He doesn’t prepare or put in the work.
Remember the whole too many video games talk? We’re pretty sure that was directed at Adams.
Apparently, Adams thinks he has enough talent that he doesn’t have to do anything else. Well, we’ve got news for you pal.
You fucking suck and if you’re not even going to put in the effort to get better, then we’ve got no use for you. Wal-Mart is probably hiring greeters, though.
Pretty poor argument, and writing in general. Many players suffer a sophomore slump. The Packers problems are not solely one player’s fault. Grow up.
But hey, this article is flaming click-bait. That’s really what you’re after, right?
He won’t get it until he gets the Lacy treatment
And yet there he is, over and over again, while Abby and Janis ride the bench
Blame falls on the coaching staff as well. This clown shouldn’t be on the field
They should replace him with Colt Lyerla
I love it! Keep posting this! Maybe TT and Buffoon will see it!
I think Colt rang up my tab at KFC the other day….
LOL
If you have a receiver that is not practicing properly it also has a domino effect.
The Packers until recently have only had one WR on the practice squad. Adams, Cobb, and Jones are probably getting most of the practice snaps with Rodgers. That left Janis, Abby, and the one PS guy taking most of the scout team snaps for the D from Tolzien and Hundley. With the added PS WR, Abby and Janis are probably getting more snaps with Rodgers in practice. We all know how Rodgers must feel comfortable with the Receivers in practice before he starts looking to them in games conditions.
I bet Tolzien and Hundley if in a game condition (and believe me we do not want to see that) they would be on page with Janis and Abby because they are throwing to them in practice every day.
Adams if truly not preparing correctly, and only having one WR on the PS has impacted the integration of Janis and Abby into the offense including their development of trust with Rodgers.
Insightful as always Howard. That’s a very good point as a negative for Ted Thompson. With Nelson going down, the lack of quality depth, other nagging injuries at the position, most notably Montgomery, Thompson should have figured out a way to get another receiver on the practice squad when Montgomery went down.
Thanks. With Montgomery out and then Abby injured for two or three weeks I thought TT was going to make a move at least on the PS for an added receiver.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Santa needs to take Fallout off Davante’s X-mas list …
He’s been a naughty receiver !
Wasn’t Adams a #1 pick? Seems to me we have little to show for our recent number ones, in addition to him.
No he wasn’t…second rounder
Oh Teddy, Teddy, Teddy…if you need help with talent evaluations just pick up the phone and call me.
To think, I would’ve nabbed Allen Robinson for our squad over Adams if you’d just follow my draft board (sigh).
I think it’s a sophomore slump. We knew out of college he was a 4.59 guy so he’s not going to take the top off defenses
I feel like he has quit in him. Which is worse than being unprofessional. This is a detrimental part of draft and develop sometimes you miss. I think it’s telling that montgimry was not IR sooner. There’s a difference on the smarts of a Stanford guy and a San Jose guy.
Receivers don’t just develop in one or two years. It took 4 years for DD and he was a seventh round who played with Mcnair the year he won the heisman.
Even a dumpster fire like Jacob Walker was inconsistent for a while.
I think it’s a reach to expect what we did and his ceiling might not even be better than Walker’s . Who Fu cked off millions.
You can grow out of immaturity maybe not a broken person.
NFL players needing years to develop, is 80’s and 90’s thinking, that paradigm has changed in today’s NFL. The change was slow but steady starting with free agency, no longer could you keep a whole team together, thus the slow progression that rookies and 2nd, 3rd year players needed to have bigger impacts.
Packers could have had Allen Robinson rather than this bum…. Davante is one of the laziest route runners I have ever seen. His career is going to be short in GB.
What i find puzzling, if not confusing. Is that the knock on Janis was that he didn’t practice well, didn’t run the routes right, ect.
So now we hear that adams basically has the same problems as Janis, although Rodgers has sung Adam’s praises earlier on. which only leads me to believe, that it’s more about personality’s than talent.
I just can’t understand why they don’t use Janis’s speed at least on post routes to make a corner and a safety cover him, helping to open up the field for Rodgers, Cobb, and/or Adams/Jones.
One more thing…If a player is not practicing the right way, or is always out of shape. To me, that is on the coaching staff.
This article Sucks…. No content or inside information, why should we care what this guy thinks?
I agree, I thought the same thing while reading it.
A number one pick? GB hasn’t had a number one pick in decades. Second round pick.
Let’s look at TTs first round picks over the last three years.
2015: Damarius Randall. Stud. Moved from safety in college to starting corner in the pros.
2014: Ha Ha Clinton Dix. Starting safety almost immediately. Stud.
2013: Datone Jones. A complete switch in positions from college, playin great ball & has sure earned an extension.
Wasn’t Rodgers bragging about how professional Adams was at the beginning of the year? Hmmmm….
Man crush . . . or asked to “hype” him up. Just speculation guys! so don’t get yourselves all pissed for nothing . . .
Viqueens look for halfass. He can go get his millions there. Go Pack Go!!!
This article Sucks…. No content or inside information, why should we care what this guy thinks?
—————–
Because you came to HIS freaking website! You wanna go read someone report something, then go to the other 20 fucking Packer sites for that.
So the guy that was the MVP of OTAs and training camp doesn’t practice well and hasn’t been preparing himself?
That doesn’t make any sense.
I find it more likely that Adams is hurt. He is a quick twitch player- as Rodgers has called him- that relies on quickness and not straightline speed to get away from defenders. Add a high ankle sprain to that equation and say goodbye to the quickness that allows him to get open. And you drop the ball when you are thinking about other parts of your body. It’s a built in excuse.
I find that much more likely than the guy who Aaron Rodgers was calling a ProBowl type player in the preseason suddenly doesn’t know how to be a professional.
I agree with you Shawn. Injuries are almost always the explanation for unexpected drop offs in production like this. GB has pretty good talent evaluators for the WR position (i.e., MVP QB Aaron Rodgers, coaches) Yeah, Adams has been “healthy enough” to play, but that ankle is probably still bothering him. I’ve seen Adams (probably a couple weeks ago) hop around to make a turn (coddling his ankle) when a healthy player would have cut hard. That ankle is likely slowing him down and distracting him. I don’t expect much from him the rest of the year, but I would expect him to play much better next year when healthy.
Agree with this article. Davante Adams is trash and I hope he gets cut.
