That was one of the themes from Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy on Monday.
So while everyone seems to have their own theory as to why the Packers are inept, the coach says it’s a lack of trust.
When asked why the team’s fundamentals are breaking down, McCarthy gave this answer.
“Trust and doing too much. Individuals having fundamental mistakes. Something happens over again, it’s my position to change. Emphasizing things we do better is my emphasis. We need to hit hard this week.”
McCarthy brought it up again when he was asked what he told the team.
“The two things I talked to team about is trust and confidence. You have to have trust in the man next to you. Our issue isn’t people not doing enough. We’re playing hard. It’s the efficiency of our fundamentals. That was my message to the team.”
What we don’t really get is where this came from. Why there are suddenly trust issues.
The Packers seemed to trust each other just fine when they started the season 6-0.
Losing usually makes guys start pointing fingers, though. There’s definitely some of that going on in Green Bay right now.
These guys are either going to come together or they’re going to fall apart, if they haven’t totally done so already.
This reminds me of the last year of Lindy Infante. When McCarthy starts the loser talk, saying things like “we just need to make 2 more big plays”, then it’s over.
When MM parrots week after week, “look at the film, work on/fix that and get better” what he’s really saying in duh-speak is, “do the same shit again this week, have totally whack game targets that mean nothing, tackle like shit, get pushed around, take another ass kicking, generally shit the bed and get worse.”
Perhaps it is the motherfucker saying there are “trust” issues that the players do not “trust” . . . this buffoon was given the keys to the castle then promptly shit his pants in the grand entrance . . . WE have to hit that 20 runs mark! We must maintain pad level moving forward! These things will be looked at and corrected! . . . yeah
“Trust,” “Confidence” – Lose one more in a row to the Vikings and you’ll have trouble selling tickets!
100% correct. I took my parents from Florida to that Detroit game, bought stub hub tickets for $300 each, flew up there, Pro Shop etc. etc. For the team to play like that at home against the Lions. I don’t really care if they win or lose now. Just lost interest.
Feel for you. Started out as a really cool gesture, but aside from seeing your parents, probably felt like you put a match to a couple grand.
I said this after the NFC championship game last year and I was hammered for it. But McCarthy has coached this team for 10 years, this is right around the time players start tuning you out, the message doesn’t have the same meaning as it used too. Sitton talked about low energy, that’s what people say when they don’t give a shit about what their bosses are saying anymore. You just go through the motions hoping either you get the balls to quit or someone fires you. The NFC title game meltdown by McCarthy pretty much sealed his future as far as players trusting the program and buying into it. That’s all done now, you don’t get that back. Could be big changes this off season.
BAM! Right on the money.
They are placing the blame vocally and publicly right at the feet of their head coach. In the other article, Sitton couldn’t say much more than he did without hanging McCarthy and company out to dry. He more or less did anyway.
He even tried to catch himself and say that they have to execute, but he said it right after saying everyone knows what they are trying to execute.
And as far as the energy thing and Sitton “not really knowing why that is,” this is just another roundabout way for Sitton to put the blame at the feet of McCarthy.
If we shit the bed versus Minnesota, the dream many of us have shared about the end of the Mike McCarthy era could be right around the corner.
Oh, I didn’t realize there is no possibility this is just a slump, and not organizational doom, again. Seems to happen just about every year, maybe even a couple times a year.
It must be a league-wide epidemic of some sort because there are 24 teams with worse records. I suppose they all lost their games in a preferential manner, right? Ya know, the “right” way to lose more.
Yup, it’s all over folks. Cancel those NFL Sunday Ticket subscriptions before it’s too late.
When is the last time McCarthy mentioned pad-level? I see it in the comments every week, and it was kind of humorous, originally.
@ Andy Pants. Your right it is humorous . . . or used to be. Love the sarcasm though. Love the homer delusion as well. Keep using your right as a free person to exhibit this inordinate amount of confirmation bias to rationalize this cluster fuck, while at the same time admonishing us for calling people out for not doing their jobs well. Go git em’ tiger!
Hard to trust when coaches do same thing over and over failing but hoping for different results
I think they’re playing like shit, and they have been for a month. I also think there is a decent chance that it’s just a slump, and that they did not win six consecutive games by accident. There have been lots of injuries, lack of continuity, etc. Despite this, they’re 6-3, and they were even in both of the last two games till the end. The season is not over just because they look terrible right now.
Call me a homer, but three dismal games does not equal a long-term trend, neither for this season, nor for the organization in general. Recent history (since McCarthy arrived) shows that the Packers are one of the best teams in the league.
The difference in my perspective and yours is that I consider the Packers to be a very successful team based on their current 6-3 record, four consecutive division titles, six consecutive Playoff appearances, three recent NFC Championship game appearances, and one Super Bowl victory–all with the same cast of people you mock by your name.
I don’t know, or by any means guarantee, that the Packers will begin winning again, but I still would bet on it. They’ll probably still at least make the Playoffs, which are always a crapshoot. But, again, the difference will be that I don’t consider winning the Super Bowl as the only standard of success.
If our team was the Colts or the Cardinals I would agree with you but we are the Green Bay fucking Packers. The super bowl trophy is named after who? Thats why fans of this organization expect super bowls, not one and done in the playoffs. Yes TT has built a good team but it’s not great. I’ll continue to back my Pack but that doesn’t mean I have to be satisfied with how TT and MM are running things.
i thought we were a shoe-in for a second dynasty after the SB win and continued streak to 13-0 going into KC in 2011.
Then when they lost to kansas shitty, right after the experts like Cowher were proclaiming we had the greatest FB team of all time, i was in shock. Then the my hopes were dashed completely when MM was asked why he thought they had finally lost a game to end their 19 game streak. MM stated:
“I really don’t know. i thought we had really had a really good practice, we had really looked good in practice all that week.”
that’s when a cold sweat crept up my spine. I had just ordered another owner’s share certificate, which didn’t arrive on time by that sunday anyway, and UPS wound up throwing it into the muddy rain swept front lawn. have never ordered another thing from them again. i am a jinx, or am jinxed, or something?
that was my first shadow of doubt that we might not to sweep the nfl world off its feet with a multiyear dynastic run, a la the original dynastic-maker, Vince L! and you fans know the rest of the saga, this shocker of a multi year playoffs run, only to always lose to the eventual SB champion, and usually to a team we had beaten before in the regular season!
wait a min. i just thought of something: Has MM’s Packers EVER beaten a team in the post-season that they had previously beaten in the regular season??
My sentiments exactly!
Ok. What confuses me is why you and so many others seem so angry though. If you seriously think the Packers should win the Super Bowl, however often is satisfactory in your view (obviously they’re not winning it often enough) you are obviously setting yourself up for disappointment. None of the other 31 teams give a shit who the trophy is named after–it does not matter–and they’re all trying to win it every year, just the same.
You call me a homer or whatever, yet, I think the Packers are playing like shit right now, too. And they’re pissing me off as well, right now. The difference is that, unlike with the constant doomsday declarations in these comments sections, I see a way out. I see a chance to turn it around, and I would not be surprised if they do turn it around. I mean, just look at your name, it’s absurd. It says it right there, “TTSUCKS,” but you admit that he has built a good team that has obviously won a recent Super Bowl. Both what your name implies and your statement cannot logically both hold true at the same time, so there is dissonance between your own positions. So I don’t think I’m the one who has delusions or has to rationalize anything. All I’m saying is that they will probably turn it around. You, on the other hand, directly contradict yourself and have come to the conclusion that TT has built a good team, but somehow he “sucks.” You have declared MM “sucks” and has “shit the bed upon entrance,” (whatever that means), yet he won a Super Bowl and produced winning teams every year but one under his tenure. I think your positions require more rationalization than mine. And all you can fall back on will be “but they didn’t win the Super Bowl.” And for the record, it is factual untrue to suggest that the Packers are a “one and done” type of Playoff team. Three NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl W obviously disprove that notion.
Andy Pants, I have had this name for years. I have never appreciated this brain trust from BEFORE the SB. They do a few things well. They do MANY THINGS poorly. When you have a QB1 like Rodgers FALL INTO YOUR LAP positive things are going to happen. One of the things MM does do well is coach up a QB. that, in my opinion is about it. Poor game management, time management, lack of prep. poor adjustments, playing favorites, etc. Once Rodgers got “coached up” the team went wild. Part of the reason they were able to was because of the LEFT OVER PLAYERS from the previous GM! This was NOT YOUR TYPICAL TT draft and develop group. He definitely cleaned house though after the SB didn’t he?? Well, as Sitton said, they are too predictable. I have been seeing that for quite a few years! What team have you been watching?? How about after the NFCCG when MM said that he HAD TO HIT A CERTAIN NUMBER of rushing attempts? What kind of fucked up OCD is that? And DC? this goon shits the bed regularly! old washed up QB’s play like demigods! My name MMTTDCSUCK (was actually started as a sarcastic rub) is now in my opinion quite true with much empirical proof. TT has HOW MUCH UNDER THE CAP right now? Do we not NEED a few above average players to push us over the top at this time? And TT drafting? WTF? half of the guys he gets in the first few rounds are busts or are called “stretches” by the pundits! I have in no way stated that I like anything about the “frugal GM”, nor did I say that he built a good team!! Get your facts straight Brother! Big Gay Clay said that! not me! lol!!! Personally I believe he has been one lucky fucker regarding A Rodgers. He cannot draft ILB’s, DT’s, or OT’s! He has annually shit the bed with his picks. Then REF– USES to go get help for very weak positions. I am NOT deluded, I just see through all of the inculcating that sports talk and other sports media feeds to you. They build these buffoons up to be bigger than life and you fall for it! hook, line, and sinker. Bullshit!
This one was bothering me Andy, so just for clarification, you wrote : ” You have declared MM “sucks” and has “shit the bed upon entrance,” (whatever that means),” I wrote: “this buffoon was given the keys to the castle then promptly shit his pants in the grand entrance”. What that means is every Castle has a “Grand Entrance” kind of like a foyer. I was merely waxing poetic. I actually meant that it did not take him too long to fuck things up, that was all . . .
I’m not challenging you for being upset with a nasty losing streak. I’m pointing out the hysteria and unnecessary rage and panic.
Right now the Packers need a coach that will kick them right square in the ass, like Lombardi or Holmgren. Too much pussy footing. Packers are playing like they are tired and don’t give a damn. Someone needs to light a fire under their overpaid asses.
Oh, and tackling. Do they even teach it anymore? It’s easy to get faked out if you are looking at the other guys upper body, but you will almost never get faked out if you are looking at their mid-section. This is high school fundamentals that they can’t even get right.
good point. that catch and run by Golden Tate was a perfect case-in-point. and Shields et. al. make a tackle and the game was still in Rodgers hands, but only because it was the Lions.
If AR decides to [once again] spend the first half shaking off his hangover or whatever, against the Vikes, he is going to indicate to me that he is becoming our Favre #2.
Rodgers is playing scared. He’s not throwing to open receivers. He even admitted that he got scared to throw to wide open Cobb against Carolina. I think Rodgers is overthinking it and too worried about his interception stats. I think when MM says trust issues he’s really talking about Rodgers. Rodgers have watched film after every game and he must see that there are lots of wide open receivers that he missed. We’ve seen Rodgers become resilient in the past. Where is the Relax moment. Common man. We need you to be Rodgers again.
“nor did I say that he built a good team!! Get your facts straight brother! Big Gay Clay said that! Not me! lol!!!”
Yes he did say that, not you. But you literally said, immediately after and directly in response to Big Gay Clay, that you agree with that statement, i.e., “My sentiments exactly!” Forgive me for not understanding that “my sentiments exactly” were not actually your exact sentiments.
The issue is that I think you have unrealistic expectations, and you react dramatically to issues that affect every team in the league. Look at the Broncos with Manning. They signed B. Davis, but where are they going? Where will they be next year? Where were they five years ago?
When your expectations are not met, you declare everyone to be incompetent. You firmly believe that multiple winning seasons, divison titles, playoff appearances, NFC championship game appearances, and a Super Bowl win are not evidence that this team is and has been exceptionally good for years. You characterize this relative success as being so beneath your expectations, that the teams management is not only underperforming, but entirely incompetent. For the record, I agree that Capers probably needs to go, but I don’t think he is a total disaster. You overreact to a small losing streak in the midst of a decade of sustained success. I don’t understand it, and I have to ask, which organizations are better than the Packers, and what is your evidence?
Some recent teams that I’ve heard (not necessarily from you) that the Packers should hope to be more like are the 49ers, the Seahwks, the Broncos, the Steelers, and the Patriots. Most of these teams are a flash in the pan, having a couple good seasons before fading to irrelevancy. Most have not won more than one, if any, Suoer Bowls recently. I see the Patriots as being better than the Packers over the past decade or so, but really nobody else. What do you think? And, unless you can demonstrate that there are more than just one or two better teams, what do you think that says about the Packers’ relative standing as an organization in the league?
*V. Davis, and that was in response to MMTTDCSUCK. I’m typing on a phone, so I’m not sure why my comment got posted down here.
it is called lag, has nothing to do with your phone. others were typing their posts as same time you were. check the date/time stamps on those posts that got up before yours.
Regarding “My sentiments . . .” sorry! I was being figurative, not literal. I understand why you took it that way. Back to the issues, MM still sucks and so does TT. Everyone wants DC gone so that is that. The three game losing streak has nothing to do with my DISDAIN for this Buffoons game time incompetence. I have railed against this coach from waaaaay before the SB of 2010! I just did not get on a fire MM bandwagon! My disrespect for his coaching (not as a human being) comes from years of frustration! not just recently! As far as coaches? Until “sporty’s” grow more intellect we will continue to have these messes. Most of these coaches are great in focusing on one thing at a time. Not maintaining game time juggling of ideas. That is where the problems arise. There have only been a few great coaches. We had one. We don’t now! When you watch the game are you surprised often with the great play calling? great adjustments? the fire and the energy coming from the coach? I am not . . . B. Bellicheat has all of those things plus more. He is a coach! But he cheats! and that sucks! When I see incompetence, I study it for a while to see if I am right, or to find out what the problems are. This team has many problems, and they are SYSTEMIC! That takes a while to build up and gather steam. It has been building up steam since 2009 and A Rodgers and Woodson and Nick Collins just to mention a few were enough of a driving force mentally and physically to stem the tide. Two of those three are gone, and the dam has been leaking worse each year with the Buffoon MM at the helm and the fucktard TT “The Frugal GM” supplying the replacements that are not good enough to stop the dam from collapsing. Enjoy the flood. It is all for you. I love the Pack! just not this brain trust! They are over rated IMHO.
Ok.
