The Green Bay Packers are going to have themselves a visit with receiver James Jones.
The former Packer is reportedly on his way to Green Bay and it appears the Packers have actual interest in signing him. Jones was released by the New York Giants on Saturday.
Jones played seven seasons with the Packers and would bolster a receiving corps that will be without leading receiver Jordy Nelson this year.
Jones’ best season came in 2012, when he caught 64 balls for 784 yards and an NFL-leading 14 touchdowns. Jones has 814 yards receiving in his final season in Green Bay. He signed a three-year $10 million deal with the Oakland Raiders prior to the 2014 season and turned in 73 catches for 666 yards and six touchdowns.
Although that was a career high in receptions, Jones’ paltry 9.1 yard average got him released during the offseason. He signed with the Giants a little over a month ago and actually led the team with 15 receptions for 187 yards in the preseason.
That wasn’t good enough to get him a roster spot in New York, but at least it’s evidence that Jones has a little left in the tank.
If the Packers sign Jones, they’ll have to release another player. They currently have five receivers on the roster and chances are, they’ll release a player who plays another position if they sign Jones.
