Safety Sean Richardson started to get more playing time on defense as the 2014 season wore on.
He was used as an extra defensive back in certain sub packages because of his ability to play the run. In the offseason, Richardson received a restricted free agent offer sheet from the Oakland Raiders that the Packers matched.
That was as good a sign as any that the Packers felt Richardson had something to offer.
Now, they’re trying to find more ways to work him in to a crowded defensive backfield.
“He’s coming into his own,” coach Mike McCarthy said. “I thought he had an excellent year last year with the opportunities he had. We’re looking for ways to have him more involved defensively. He was our top one or two special teams players.”
Finding playing time for Richardson is going to be easier said than done.
The Packers have three talented safeties in Morgan Burnett, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Micah Hyde. They also have a glut of cornerbacks that they’ll need to find playing time for.
In camp, however, the Packers have been increasingly using Richardson in their nickel packages.
Whether that will carry over into the season remains to be seen. Right now, this seems like one of those good problems to have.
Monty are you really a bears fan lol
Sean Richardson sucks! He is a liability in coverage. When a qb sees him on the field they check to a pass and throw it over his head. Dude is so stiff and can’t cover anyone. I know they like him in the run game but they are better off bringing another lb on the field. just don’t get what they see in him.
Agreed.
disagree. Richardson can cover, has good speed and can hit. Also biggest DB on field so can cover big receivers and TE’s we face all season.
