After the season-ending injury to receiver Jordy Nelson and the prospect of playing behind an offensive line that will likely be down three starters, Aaron Rodgers has apparently had enough.
Playing time, that is.
Rodgers alluded to the fact that he may not play again until the regular season begins, on Wednesday.
“We’re right where we need to be,” Rodgers said. “We’ve had some productive drives when we’ve been out there. I’m happy where we’re at. We have some guys banged up right now, so not sure what the playing time will be, but whatever Mike decides, I’m confident we’ll be ready when the season starts.”
Starters typically play very little, if at all, in the final preseason game. They normally get the most playing time during the third game, but with a line that may very closely resemble a sieve, it’s probably best to send Scooter Tolzien out there to get killed.
The offensive line appears that it will be without left tackle David Bakhtiari, who’s already missed a week with a knee injury; left guard Josh Sitton, who has an ankle injury; and right guard T.J. Lang, who suffered a concussion in Sunday’s game.
And now that we think about it, it may not even be Tolzien who gets fed to the wolves. He also suffered a concussion against Pittsburgh.
That likely means you’ll get a real long look at Brett Hundley and Matt Blanchard.
Totally worth the price of admission!
if they play Rodgers with the backup line, all play calls should be RUN. We’ve got 3 guys trying out for the #3 back. Give one of them the ball every down until we score a touchdown, punt or Rodgers leaves the game. It will give you a good idea how these backups run block too. Bring in Hundley and Blanchard and then throw until the cows come home, if you like. Otherwise – sit Rodgers for the entire game.
Why even say it’s probably best to send out Scott just to later hint at how incredibly stupid that is considering his concussion.
Also the #3 running back position is not currently as important as #3 wr. There will be a lot more throwing than running on Saturday to figure out who will be STARTING on the outside.
