With their third-round pick, the Green Bay Packers went offense, selecting Stanford receiver Ty Montgomery.
At this point, we’re sure Ted Thompson is drafting out of spite. He hates that we know that he doesn’t always draft the best player available and instead drafts for need. So he’s decided to show us all by exclusively picking guys at positions where the Packers have no need.
Montgomery fits that bill. The Packers drafted three receivers just last year. They already have two Pro Bowlers in addition to those three guys. So why not draft another receiver?!
Somewhere, Ted is mumbling, “I got you good, you fucker!” to no one in particular.
Let’s talk about Ty Montgomery (6-0, 221), though.
He should really be looked at as an all-purpose player, rather than a receiver.
Certainly, he has receiver skills, but he will drop some balls. In 2014, he caught 61 balls for 604 yards and three touchdowns. He was better in 2013, catching 61 balls for 958 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also rushed for 334 yards in his college career.
Here’s where Montgomery really makes sense for the Packers — on returns.
He averaged 27.4 yards on kick returns throughout his college career and scored three touchdowns. Although he only returned punts as a senior, Montgomery averaged 19.8 on 12 returns and scored two touchdowns.
That’s great news for the Packers, who probably no longer have any interest in exposing Randall Cobb on returns. Last year, they tried to force running back DuJuan Harris into the role of kick returner and he was a disaster. He was eventually replaced by Cobb. On punts, Cobb and Micah Hyde split duties.
Montgomery, who ran a 4.5 40, may be a luxury item on offense who gets a few snaps a game. However, he should make an immediate impact as a returner.
Here’s the NFL.com scouting report.
Montgomery is a likable person with high character and an ability to leave a positive impression in draft interviews, but teams will still have to figure out how they want to use him. His hands might not be trustworthy enough to be part of a three-wide-receiver set. Montgomery can flip fields and change games with his ability in the return game and might be best-utilized in a dynamic, open-minded offensive system that gets the ball in his hands quickly and allows him to use his run after catch talents.
Bang it for the highlights.
Think Clay likes how the white rat’s fucked up this draft? Maybe Dom is going to play a 6-1? Could go down as one of the most damaging Packer drafts of all time..no immediate improvement at all. AR ain’t gonna last forever.
This draft….ugh….keep in mind that Paul Dawson was still on the board when they picked Montgomery (who I liked two years ago) as a prospect.
Let’s just skip the next few rounds and pick again in the 7th.
Go Ted Go!
Dawson has the skills, but the talent doesn’t do much good when the guy doesn’t really give shit, only gives half the effort, and has no interest in improving his technique.
Read Teddy’s responses to questions asked about his 3 picks? The guy is an absolute freak with the people skills that make Belichek sound like an outgoing extrovert. Nothing he said makes sense. He’s going to cost a true HOF qb multiple championships ’cause he has no fucking clue. Team is a one trick pony thanks to this asshole.
I wouldn’t trade Rodgers for any QB but he has blame in the NFC Championship loss as well.
GB has been a playoff team for years drafting players nobody knows. Jordy Nelson I remember everyone piling on that one asking who is that? Just last year with Adams same thing. Remember Nick Collins from Bethune Cookman College? people though Ted was insane.
Go be a Bear or Viking fan I’m tired of the whining.
Ty could definitely help on returns. If Ty gets any playing time on O he seems to have a knack for getting yards after the catch. Is Abby not healing well?
I don’t know guys….starting to feel like he’s all about building up special teams. Maybe over reaching a bit since firing Slocum’s ass was the best thing that’s happened to our special teams in a decade, but I think its possible that’s where his head could be.
Or, his head is COMPLETELY up his ass.
I agree with you 100%, all of the guys drafted so far could be solid on special teams
Agreed . . . He got fortunate with A Rodgers. Most of his first rounds are not that special. He is enigmatic I will say that. Absolutely confusing at times. I am wondering if he may be suffering “mental issues” from his playing days (concussions)? Something is way off . . .
This guy has been drafting with special teams as his priority for years and they still finished last in 2014. Maybe he should consider something else. He’s closing in on Chip-Kelly-Insanity status
I have to agree special teams, character and physicality are the the common thread in this draft. Seems like ILb is not that big of a concern. Maybe he didnt like any of the top 5 but that last pick is a real headscratcher. They must feel like they have a player in house.
Apparently the Pack likes the Randall Cobb model since this is another one of those guys.
I believe TT has made one thing very clear- Clay Matthews is playing ILB this season.
Agreed !
……. but still confused by the TT’s picks.
Waste of time – going to bed ….
How do you spell ‘Clusterfuck’ ?
2-0-1-5 P-a-c-k-e-r-s D-r-a-f-t.
Heard in the Packers war room.
“I know, but can he advance a runner with two outs?”
In Ted, we re-load the bong.
If I hear “I’m just gonna work hard” one more time, ahmo take a chainsaw to a motherfucker.
I’m not thrilled about this draft either.
But…It’s nice to see you guys that blasted me concerning TT…..coming around. #bouttime
So let’s see, we have two project corners who aren’t even 6ft tall and a kick returner? I’m having a hard time getting excited for this draft.
Where the hell are the inside linebackers?
Peppers, Guion… TT and team already know a few will be available down the rode. They’ll have to get someone released for cap reasons… and released many will be…
This is hilarious. I have respect for the Packers and what they have accomplished, but the first three rounds of this draft are complete ass for GB. At this rate, you will be lucky to get back to the SB with Rodgers (who will be 32 at the end of the year). My advice to Packers fans. get this guy out and get someone who knows how to sign free agents and draft better than this buffoon. Anyways, way to piss away this year’s draft class TT!!!!!! Lions fans salute you!!!!!
As a Packer fan from the 60’s, I would have to say that I basically agree with you. This year may be one of the worst draft classes I have EVER SEEN. TT has continued the bed shitting from the playoffs . . . Very disappointing, if I was a conspiracy theorist (which I am NOT) I would start connecting the dots (coupling the last playoff game and this draft cluster fuck) and say it appears as if they are throwing their games and their potential out the door so that some other team can move up. I personally feel this guy is a buffoon. Some of his ideas are great. Drafting? Nope! not so good . . .
Why dont all you whiners just take your talent to the NFL where it belongs! We are consistently a great team because of TT and MM and all you do is complain. Take your whinning to Chicago where it belongs!
So SGT, what are you handling? . . .
because of TT and MM? what did MM ever do to make this a consistently great team? one SB fluke win against the only coach that is even dumber than him does not make a CONSISTENTLY “great” string of postseason appearances. the only thing MM has been consistent at is the annual postseason choke, like that last debacle when he couldn’t even figure out when a two minute drill should be invoked [like, inside two min.???]. wonder why they didn’t fire his ass along with his ST coach dummy [dummies hire dummies, don’t you know?]
Yep! agreed!
Fuck you Sarge! This fruitcake got lucky with Rodgers’ and he and fat boy have ridden that horse since. Team Is mediocre without AR and certainly hasn’t improved one iota for ’15 in the past 48 hours.
Well what a sally you are!! You can skip Chicago and go straight to Minnesota you pussy!!
good one Girl Scout…u must be a deep throater like your idol Terrible Teddy
Like I have been saying for the past five years and I sound like a broken record, the Packers win in spite of TT and MM so I would have to agree with Bobby d,if not for Arod those two buffoons would have been run out of town years ago.
They just keep shitting the bed more epically than before! How do you top completely blowing a Super Bowl appearance last year?? Pull off a draft like this one, that is how! I could not believe the end to last years playoff game, and then this comes along. Months to prepare for this, and TT picks these three guys? No TE, no ILB, no DE? Two out of the three are PROJECTS. WTF?
TT got them more than enough talent to take them over the top. how can you blame MM’s melt down on TT? MM was the one who shit the bed with a much more talented team than either SB contenders last year, and that was a repeat of the previous 3 years’ scenario.
please explain how that is TT’s fault? or else, just admit you are a whiner for whining’s sake?
Not a whiner, a realist. His drafting is not that good. He has a phone at the game, he could of connected with MM at that game. He could have been down there on the field. He played pro ball, he knows what is going on! Where was he at? General Managers have a say in games if they deem it necessary . . . Fritz, come on, admit you are a TT apologist . . . lol
I had kick returner pretty high on my needs list. Harris really sucked. Field position is Rodgers best friend. Also, the Packers have done pretty damn well with project CB’s for awhile now.
ILB’s not so well Icebowler . . . nice try. Why do we continue to have good ILB’s to draft each year, and go for projects instead? TE would have been good as well. Those first three picks were sub par, they may all be great athletes, but while extended projects at CB every year seem to pay some dividends, it would be nice to address the real “weak spots” and not just have to use your personal confirmation bias TO ACCEPT the bottom line of some very inept drafting this year . . .
Well, it turns out we got the 3rd fastest ILB in the 4th round with Jake Ryan. Furthermore, I am all for keeping Clay inside on early downs and outside of later downs. He was awesome moving around like that in the 2nd half of last season. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Also, I think Bradford is going to be a very good ILB. Why Capers and MM didn’t put him there from the start last year is beyond me. If we can get through the 1st half of the season without injuries to Shields, Heyward, and Hyde, I think Randall & Rollins will be up to speed at CB by the middle of the year. All of you naysayers, need to get on board with the “develop” part of Green Bay’s Draft and Develop strategy. Otherwise, you’re going to be miserable as long as that philosophy remains in place.
@ Icebowler. Sounds good to me getting the 3rd fastest linebacker in a weak draft in the fourth round! CMIII does NOT want to play inside. Carl Bradford has yet to see the field for any important game time play. I TOTALLY GET the D and D, but at the same time I believe that the D and D needs a shot of players that are needed directly, not some “projects” that pan out two to three years later. About the time some of these guys start to get it, some of the older players are either leaving or being jettisoned, so you are JUST REPLACING THOSE GUYS. We need immediate help at ILB and TE and DL. Some of the “projects for those “positions” are not working out so well. But that is OK, you continue to use your confirmation bias, whilst looking through your rose colored glasses. I think that we need good players now while Rodgers can still play, not when he’s old and grey.
I think there is one subject we might be able to agree on. I thought this would have been a good year to get a few other teams free agents or make a few trades. Screw the supplemental draft picks for a few years. Can you imagine if we had NT Ngata and/or TE Jimmy Graham added to out team this year. Revis was probably too expensive, but there were some other good CB’s who switched teams.
Talk about addressing our few immediate weak spots….how about QB, FB and LS. Holy shit! Think Teddy’s officially lost his fucking mind
Dude could be used as a WR out of the backfield like Cobb was too.
Agreed with most that this appears to be a very underwhelming draft by TT, the criticism he’s received for his historical drafts is a bit much though.
You need to move out of mommys basement and get a life. I am pretty sure TT and MM are better judges of the Packers needs than some moron like you. Give it up for crissakes……..
