Look, Craig Newsome wasn’t awful, but he wasn’t that good either. He really will forever be known for one great play. You know the one I’m talking about. It’s the one in that photo above. Divisional game in 1996 at San Francisco. First offensive play for the 49ers, Wayne Simmons destroys fullback Adam Walker. Newsome scoops up the fumble and runs it 31 yards for the score. So actually, Simmons made that play and Newsome just happened to be in the right place at the right time. But he’s part of a highlight, which is more than we can say for Ahmad Carroll. Newsome lasted four totally nondescript seasons with the Packers before they traded him to those very 49ers in 1999. He only lasted one year in San Francisco and then was out of the league. It’s hard to call Newsome a total bust, but he pretty much literally only made that one play during his Packers’ tenure.
