Even though he was a safety in college, the Green Bay Packers will be making first-round pick Damarious Randall a cornerback in the pros.
That got us to thinking — the Packers have drafted quite a few cornerbacks in the first round over the years and a lot of them have been total garbage.
Not all of them, but a lot.
Does that mean Randall is destined to suffer the same fate?
No, but while we’re not giving up on Randall before giving him a chance, we’re not going to get our hopes up either.
You’ll soon see why.
I think that the most important point you make here is the last one: we’re due! And if Big Ted blew it on both of his first two picks this year, it is going to put a serious damper on his long term reputation, whereas if he hits with one (or maybe even both!) then he will be on his way to surpassing Ron Wolf’s legacy. Not to even mention what will happen when AR brings the Lombardi back to Titletown…..
Nice piece….but sobering. Still find it hard to believe that Wolf went small with T-Buck instead of taking Troy Vincent. Massive whiff. I totally forgot about Vinnie Clark, he belongs right up there with Bruce Clark when it comes to forgetability. The article makes me wonder if CB is akin to QB when it comes to first round selections, maybe it is harder to predict than most positions. Willie was awesome and probably would have been considered one of the all time GB greats had he stayed.
Still wish we would have taken Malcolm Brown in the first round this year.
Wasnt’ Antuan Edwards a cornerback? …and also a bust.
Exactly Deeepsky. In 1999 the Packers drafted CB’s, not only in the 1st round, but in the 2nd and 3rd round as well. Only the 3rd rounder, Mike McKenzie had any success. Both Edwards and 2nd round pick, Fred Vinson were total busts.
Like Randall, Edwards was considered by many to be a S coming out of Clemson. My guess is that’s why he’s not on this list (despite spending the VAST majority of his time with the Packers at the CB position).
Herb Adderly is one of my all time favorites. Tim Lewis – oh, what could have been.
