Not that we want to keep reliving that miserable piece of shit of a game that was the NFC Championship, but we found this interesting and imagine you will too. The instructions were pretty clear on the botched onside kick recovery.
We previously knew tight end Brandon Bostick, the since-released botcher, was supposed to block and not attempt to field the ball. Well, of course he did try to field the ball, screwed it up and put one of the final nails in the Green Bay Packers’ coffin.
The instructions prior to the play were crystal clear, it turns out.
According to a person familiar with (then special teams coach Shawn) Slocum’s instructions on the sideline, one of the last things he told his hands team before the play was this: “If your name isn’t Jordy Nelson or Micah Hyde, don’t try to field the ball.”
This doesn’t really tell us anything new about the play itself because, as I mentioned, we knew Bostick was supposed to block.
It really only tells us more about the depths of Bostick’s stupidity.
It’s one thing to have a blocking assignment and then you find the ball coming right at you and you try to field it. It’s entirely another thing to have a blocking assignment and specific instructions to basically stay the hell away from the ball altogether, but then try to field it anyway.
But that’s the thing about Bostick.
He seemingly had the tools to be a contributor for the Packers, but was either too selfish or too stupid to actually earn that status and play a meaningful role for the team. Dare I say, it was quite possibly both of those factors that were his undoing.
So now he gets to play for the Vikings, which is like a trip to the NFL gallows.
No wonder Slocum was so pissed, that and the fact he probably knew that play cost him his job. Interesting that Hyde has earned the coaches’ trust so quickly, that’s good to see.
I don’t know if that play cost him his job. Maybe it did. But he should have been let go a year or two ago.
I’ll be interested to see if he gets another job coaching special teams, i’d be shocked.
Let it go. We are all trying to move on here. Pack better sign Cobb quick or he is gone.
Letting Cobb walk , would be beyond stupid and him leaving after that game would be unforgiveable
If Nelson is white no way Bostik does that. But he was like “aint no coach gonna tell me I have to block for a white guy to catch a ball…”
Count on it.
Got your racism mixed up, I think.
To be really Alabama-1960’s ish, shouldn’t it have read, ‘if Nelson is black’?
Rebel’s not a racist-he’s just misunderstood. (cough)
